Shawn Levy is currently basking in the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which is exceeding expectations and poised to become the second-highest-grossing Disney movie of the year.
The film is breaking box-office records, and following a few less successful projects, it’s clear Levy will likely return to the MCU in the future. However, before he tackles another MCU project, Levy is set to direct a Star Wars movie—a franchise that fans feel is in need of a major success.
Not much is known about Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie, but it appears to be a standalone film. The movie will introduce new characters and explore fresh themes within the galaxy. Levy, working with screenwriter Jonathan Tropper, has received approval from Disney and LucasFilm. While plot details remain secret, the film will focus on themes such as the Force, connection, and individual power.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Levy shared that he aims to avoid revisiting overused timelines and wants to ensure the film offers something new and unique.
I’ll say that the experience of crafting [Deadpool & Wolverine] has forced me to think about that question. Because there’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it’s really forced me because I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie.
Although Levy may not have many specifics to share at this stage, he did hint at some overarching themes of the movie:
I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that’s Star Wars to me.
Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film is one of several new projects in the franchise. The next addition is the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew, which is reportedly encountering some internal issues. On the film front, Jon Favreau is moving from episodic television to continue The Mandalorian story with a new movie, and James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy are also set to direct new Star Wars films. No official release date has been announced for Levy’s movie.
Levy also shared that the film is currently in the development phase.
Jonathan Tropper is writing my Star Wars film. We did The Adam Project together, and we have an idea that is really exciting to us and exciting to Kathy Kennedy and Dave Filoni. One never knows if development reaches the starting gate, but my hope is that it will.
