Turns out the royal blood isn’t that special after all.
The war between the Blacks and the Greens is coming in House of the Dragon ’s season 2, and Rhaenyra’s tricky plan of enlarging her forces has just unveiled harsh truth about the Targaryens and the power that they actually hold.
The latest episodes saw the Blacks’ Queen uniting with her son Jacaerys in an attempt to find more Dragonseeds who could potentially join her in a fight for the throne.
The show hasn’t made it that clear yet, but Rhaenyra doesn’t really need to go that far since Lord Corlys Velaryon’s illegitimate son Addam will eventually become the one to mount Seasmoke, ridden by Corlys’ son Laenor before.
Despite bringing Rhaenyra a major advantage in the approaching war, Addam’s ability to claim a dragon also comes as a major problem for the Targaryens, proving that Westeros’ most powerful dynasty has been delusional about their pets all along.
Since House of the Dragon has already given a sneak peek into a bigger role for Addam which so far has all chances to follow George R.R. Martin’s narrative in Fire & Blood, the upcoming plot twist is also very likely to introduce even more problematic issues regarding the dragons’ nature and their relationships with the Targaryens.
It’s been always believed that only those of pure royal blood are capable of mounting a dragon who House Targaryen’s members choose and not vice versa.Additionally, Addam is a pretty questionable Dragonseed — he owes his allegedly half-royal blood only to Corlys Velaryon who, in his turn, can’t be considered a Targaryen either.
It’s true that the Velaryons and the Targaryens’ roots were pretty much the same, but both families followed different paths having their members marry into other wealthy dynasties, so there’s a very low chance for Lord Corlys to be a very close relative to Rhaenyra anyway.
Addam’s major achievement will now become a big reason for the Targaryens to get concerned about whether they’re indeed real masters of Westerosi dragons after all.
If the upcoming war does confirm that anyone can try claiming a dragon in case they’re not afraid of being burnt to death, this may come as a clear proof that the Targaryens’ blood isn’t even that unique to guarantee the Iron Throne.
