The romance series returns June 13.
Dearest gentle reader, maintaining a secret identity can be vexing, can it not?
News of the surprise engagement between the longtime friends spreads amongst the ton and onto the pages of Lady Whistledown’s column in the trailer, eliciting joy from the families led by Featherington and Bridgerton mamas Portia (Polly Walker) and Violet (Ruth Gemmell), respectively.
Bridgerton showrunner spills the tea on that popped question, the Lady Whistledown of it all
But the young Bridgerton soon catches on to the fact that something is amiss with his soon-to-be wife: “Is there some secret you are not telling me?” he asks his betrothed.
Of course, Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Pen’s estranged best friend and Colin’s sister, is in on the secret. “Colin cannot discover my secret,” Pen tells Eloise. “Whistledown is power.” This prompts Eloise to issue an ultimatum: “If it’s too difficult for you to reveal the truth, I will reveal it to him myself.”
Will Colin discover Pen’s secret? How will Pen maintain two identities? Could this mean the end of Lady Whistledown? The latter is what Penelope must reconcile with in part 2. “Your duty is to cater to Mr. Bridgerton’s dreams,” her mama informs her. But what about her dreams? “Ladies do not have dreams,” Lady Featherington says. “They have husbands.”

Part 1 of season 3, the first to be split in half, followed Colin as he helped coach longtime pal Pen in her pursuit for a husband. She finds a promising prospect in the form of Lord Debling (Sam Phillips), but Colin finds that he cannot deny his feelings for Penelope, leading to a steamy and much-talked-about scene in the back of a carriage. It ended with Colin proposing to Penelope.
