As everyone eagerly awaits part two of season three Bridgeton, there are a mammoth eight books that you could read in the meantime. However, there are a lot of differences between the Bridgerton books and the Netflix show, namely the characters.
Already, the third book in the series An Offer From A Gentleman was changed for Netflix, as Benedict isn’t the lead character. Not to mention, I don’t think Ariana Grande violin music was in the original books. So what about the descriptions of the characters?
Part of why Bridgeton is fab is that they have adapted a Downton Abbey-esque setting into something more modern. The cast is beautiful from Simone Ashley to Jonathan Bailey giving the ultimate fairy tale romance. However, there are a few differences to how Quinn originally wrote this characters in terms of physical difference and age.
Here is a list of the top Bridgerton characters and the differences between how they were originally written compared to how they are portrayed in the show. All I’m gonna say is that the actors have aged like fine wine when it comes to player younger roles.
Anthony Bridgerton
via NetflixTo start off, Jonathan actually does actually fit the book description of Anthony fairly accurately. All the Bridgeton family are said to have chestnut brown hair and Anthony has dark brown eyes. Hopefully we get to see more of him in part two please.
Penelope Featherington
A huge difference between the books and series for this character, is Penelope is supposed to be unattractive. Hello, to stunning Nicola Coughlan? The Featherington’s hair is described as quite auburn which is different to Nicola’s bright red hair, that looks a little less au natural – still gorgeous though. Can we just take a minute to mention Nicola is 37 and she stunningly plays a 19-year-old. I am manifesting this youthful look for myself.
Eloise Bridgerton
Claudia Jessie who plays Eloise is actually 15 years older than the age of the book character. The character starts season three at 19 years old however, Claudia completely pulls it off and I want her skin care regime. Other than that, the casting is similar as Eloise’s eyes change colour throughout the book showing there’s no clear description to follow.
Kate Bridgerton
None of the characters were specified as being white in the books so the series does a great job of bringing in diversity. Simone Ashley who is almost six foot, is also taller than the original character who was smaller than her sister Edwina. In The Viscount who Loved Me, Kate is only 20 years old whereas in the show, she is 26. The older age means that Jonathan and Simone look more similar in age and there isn’t some weird, creepy age gap. Why is Kate constantly attacked for not being married? I can’t say that looks hopeful for me at 26.
Benedict Bridgerton
A main difference between this character and the book series, is again the eye colour. In the book, Benedict has the brown eyed genes whereas Luke Thompson has very green eyes (not that we are complaining). Also, Luke is only a six year age gap from his character’s age of 29 making him perfect for the role. Another difference is his sexuality, that appears to be more fluid than within the books. However, it is still up in the air whether Benedict will marry his new love interest Sophie, following Quinn’s story.
Colin Bridgerton
Unfortunately, Luke Newton does not have the emerald green eyes that are repeatedly talked about in the books. That’s not to say his blue eyes aren’t great, just different. In the book, Colin is supposed to be 33 but in season three he is only 24 – which seems less weird.
Daphne Bridgerton
Of course, in the books Daphne is supposed to have brown eyes yet the on screen casting is very different. As a natural red head, I would like to see more genuine ginger actresses however, Phoebe Dynevor rocks the red hair very well. In The Duke & I, Daphne is described as flawless but the series shows her to not be the most popular amongst the men. The reasoning for this? Probably for the dramatic effect as it would be boring to be flawless anyway.
Simon Bassett
RIP to one of the most beautiful on screen actors, he’s not dead but he did leave Bridgerton and is now trying to rebuild his career. There is a specificity with repeated eye colours in the book, as Simon is supposed to have icy blue eyes. In the series, the handsome Regé-Jean Page is still handsome but just has brown eyes. When we meet Simon in season one, he has completely overcome his stutter but in the books he still stutters occasionally which was another small thing that got changed.
Francesca Bridgerton
PSA. This character was re-cast for season three and the actress Hannah Dodd’s auburn hair brings another red head into the Bridgerton family. In the books, Francesca has dark blue eyes but the actress has dark brown. Just wish they would have a natural ginger.
Violet Bridgerton
The main Bridgerton that holds everyone together, probably the biggest physical difference is that she is supposed to be blonde in the book. Although, Ruth Gemmell has blue eyes which is the same as Violet in the books.
