Supacell, the new Netflix superhero show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, is shaping up to be a global hit. Although the superhero genre is fairly established on the big screen, with the MCU and the DCU taking the lead, the television streaming landscape has been more experimental. Prime Video has The Boys and Invincible. Hulu has the adult comedy Extraordinary, while HBO’s The Franchise will debut later this year. Now, after the high-profile disappointment of its Jupiter’s Legacy adaptation, Netflix seems to have success with the British thriller Supacell.

Since it arrived on Netflix on June 27, Supacell has already made waves on the streamer’s global Top 10 chart for English-language television shows. The series took the #2 spot overall for the week of June 24 through June 30 with 33.5 million views and 6.4 million hours viewed. It came in ahead of established hits like previous seasons of BridgertonSweet Tooth, and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The newest season of the romance franchise, Bridgerton season 3, took the top spot on the list.

Focusing on a group of five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers, Supacell looks at characters who have little in common except for a few details. The first is that they are all Black South Londoners. It is the goal of one man, Michael Lasaki, to bring these characters together to save the woman he loves. This group also has a history of sickle cell disease and has to fend off entrapment by a secret organization.

The cast of Supacell includes Doctor Who alum Tosin Cole as Lasaki, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Adelayo Adedayo, Rayxia Ojo, Sharleen, and Giacomo Mancini. Eddie Marsan, a character actor known for a litany of roles, plays the leader of the secret organization that’s hunting the superpowered characters. Although it’s a familiar setup, the new Netflix Original has earned the praise of critics for taking what is a recognizable story and infusing it with a sense of urgency.

Created and directed by Rapman, who also serves as showrunner, Supacell season 1 ends by addressing what it has built up over the course of six episodes. However, if the series’ success continues to spread, it would not be surprising to see the strongly-reviewed superhero saga make its way back for a second installment. That’s especially true since Netflix has struggled before in the superhero genre space, and the streamer might want to finally build up its own property within it.

Breaking Down Netflix’s Latest Viewership Chart

Supacell Has Made A Very Strong Debut, And Could Stick Around

Supacell‘s performance on the Netflix chart is impressive, as it comes in behind only one title: Bridgerton season 3. The third installment of the streamer’s behemoth romance series was always going to draw in strong viewership numbers, and it has already ranked among Netflix’s most-watched titles of all time. The second part of Bridgerton season 3 arrived on June 13, suggesting impressive staying power. Meanwhile, Supacell was only eligible for a handful of days on this chart, which means it could rack up even stronger figures next week, when it has been available for a full measuring period.

Supacell came in ahead of other recent Netflix releases, such as Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (which arrived on June 26) and America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (June 20). It’s common for a new Netflix show to make a splashy debut as viewers binge-watch the latest offerings, but it will be interesting to see if Supacell can stay high on the chart. The other titles on the current list, which include previous seasons of Bridgerton and Showtime transfer Your Honor, could slip out of the top 10 within the next week, while Supacell‘s newness should keep it around for longer.

At the time of writing, Netflix hasn’t commented on a potential Supacell season 2. This isn’t cause for concern, as the show only premiered a week ago. Netflix often takes some time to deliberate on whether to renew a show, typically waiting to see how it performs within the initial 30-day window. Even some of its biggest titles from the past year, such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and One Piece, didn’t get renewed until a few weeks after their premieres.

Supacell creator Rapman confirmed he has story plans for three seasons, and that he’s told Netflix as much. That number of seasons, plus the viewership figures, could make a Supacell renewal possible. The streamer often doesn’t let shows run for very long, and the promise of a contained story would make a continuation appealing. If Supacell remains on the global viewership charts and picks up strong word-of-mouth, it could very well find itself renewed for an additional two seasons to wrap up the story Rapman envisions. Netflix will likely decide its fate within the next few weeks.
