It’s time to binge them all.
Who doesn’t love a good comedy show? There are many fans of the genre for the most obvious reason: we love to be made to laugh. But sometimes the laughter can come from a rather unlikely and even disturbing place. And dark comedies are responsible for that.
For example, fans and critics alike love Prime Video ‘s The Boys. The show takes a fresh look at the lives of superheroes and satirizes all the traditional superhero stories. At the same time, the show explores the damage that could be done to the world if superpowers fell into the wrong hands.
If you loved The Boys and all those weird gory scenes with deeper meanings made you smile, check out these 5 dark humor series.
1. Barry (2018-2023)
Highly praised by critics and audiences alike, Barry is also criminally overlooked. The series follows a main character named Barry Berkman, brilliantly portrayed by Bill Hader. He is a former U.S. Marine who ended up as a hitman. Tired of his criminal life, he goes to LA for another case, but accidentally joins an acting class, but the criminal past won’t let him go.
Fans admire the high-quality cinematography, the original central story, and the ability to mix deep, powerful moments with nuanced, dark comedy.
“It’s not only funny, it has moments of fantastic drama and tension, not to mention interesting directorial and technical dazzle. It’s bite-sized enough not to feel too depressing, and just goofy enough to undercut the very real danger and evil that it grapples with. It’s not laugh out loud funny the whole time, but it has enough comedy to cut the tension when it’s needed,” Redditor johnthomaslumsden said.
2. Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019)
At the center of this show is a married couple, Sheila and Joel Hammon. They live in a small town in California, Santa Clarita, and both are real estate agents. But one day their lives changed drastically: Sheila began to… become a zombie!
Now the two of them have to find a way to keep this a secret, which is pretty hard because of her craving for human flesh and the personality changes she goes through. The main characters are played by Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, and the way they make it all work in a non-cringing way is amazing.
3. Bad Sisters (2022)
Another totally underrated and overlooked series is this one. The story follows the Garvey sisters who became very close after the death of their parents. One thing they failed to do was save their sister Grace from marrying the abuser John Paul, an evil man who is so jealous of his wife’s bond with her siblings that he has to cause them all personal harm.
As the story unfolds, we witness his horrible affairs and literally hate the guy. Even though he seems a bit cartoonishly evil at first (until the last episode), we still understand why each of the sisters would want to find a way to kill him…
4. Evil (2019-2024)
Another supernatural dark comedy? Yes, please! Evil also has a rather original script, focusing on an unlikely team of a clinical psychologist, a soon-to-be priest, and a construction worker as they try to investigate supposedly abnormal events.
Actually, this is more of a horror-comedy, adding comedic twists to some spine-tingling scenes. And we have to admit, it works perfectly. Evil is one of the wildest shows ever created.
5. Why Women Kill (2019-2021)
The show just blew fans away every time a new season premiered. The first season showed us the lives of three generations of women as they tried to deal with terrible cheating husbands. The series highlights how women have changed from the 60’s to today, but their honest reaction to marital betrayal — remains the same.
The second season was a wild ride, with one title character going crazy over her desire to be accepted into a high society gardening club. By the end, she is willing to kill anyone who gets in her way, even if it means hurting herself.
