The Bridgerton season 3 trailer offers a sneak peek into the new season, including Lady Whistledown’s new, surprising fixation: not diamonds.

Netflix recently released the trailer for Bridgerton season 3, and in it, there are several hints about where the third installment will go, including when it comes to Penelope’s alter ego Lady Whistledown who, for the first time, noted that diamonds are not the only gem that sparkle. Bridgerton season 3 is one of the most highly anticipated series of the year, and is coming to Netflix in two parts on May 16 and June 13, 2024. The season will center on Penelope trying to find a husband with the help of her long-time friend and crush, Colin Bridgerton.

For two seasons, Penelope has written the local gossip pamphlet, Lady Whistledown. At the end of Bridgerton season 2, Penelope was found out by Eloise, but Whistledown remains a mystery to everyone else. However, in the trailer for Bridgerton season 3, it seems as though Whistledown is changing her tactics. Where the writing often focused on the diamond of the season, i.e. Daphne in season 1 and the Sharmas in season 2, it seems that season 3 will be taking a different tact. As she states in the trailer: “Diamonds are not the only gem that sparkle.”

Lady Whistledown Changes Her “Diamonds” Rule In Bridgerton Season 3

Lady Whistledown is no longer interested in diamonds

When Lady Whistledown notes that diamonds are not the only gems that sparkle in the Bridgerton season 3 trailer, she is not just referring to actual stones. In Bridgerton, the diamond of the season is a young woman named by Queen Charlotte to be particularly special or outstanding during that courting season. As a result, this person is the most sought after throughout. During Bridgerton season 1, Daphne Bridgerton was the diamond, while Edwina Sharma was the diamond of season 2. In this way, Whistledown’s comment is actually a huge shift in the Bridgerton narrative.

All this time, Lady Whistledown has focused closely on the diamond of the season, but now that Penelope is seriously trying to find a husband in season 3, this rule no longer applies as much.

Her quote in the trailer implies that the diamond is not necessarily the most important figure in the courting season anymore, and perhaps that there are other gems among the young women.

In this way, Bridgerton is breaking from its typical mold with Penelope, who is not the radiating beauty of the season, but still has plenty to offer once she learns to be confident.

Lady Whistledown May Be Hinting Too Much At Her Real Identity In Bridgerton Season 3

Penelope may be writing too close to home

Although it’s exciting to see Bridgerton shifting gears with Lady Whistledown, this abrupt change could definitely be a danger for Penelope in Bridgerton season 3. While Penelope has previously been on the outskirts of the courting season, this particular installment will have her in the middle of everything. Therefore, when she writes about the season, she will be writing a bit too close to home. If Lady Whistledown begins writing about Penelope, who is not the diamond, changing her traditional dynamic, then readers may begin to get suspicious. In this way, Penelope is putting a target on her back.

Penelope Featherington is played by Irish actress, Nicola Coughlan.

The danger here is that everyone could find out that Penelope is Lady Whistledown. In some ways, this could be a good thing. It could bring Penelope some attention as a very smart and astute person. But for the most part, it will bring her bad tidings. Like with Eloise, the deception will hurt all of Penelope’s relationships, including with Colin. Furthermore, those who have been written about by Lady Whistledown will likely resent Penelope. All in all, Penelope is in a very dangerous position during Bridgerton season 3 due to how Lady Whistledown is changing.

Who Finds Out Lady Whistledown’s Identity In The Bridgerton Books & When

Bridgerton book 4 handles Lady Whistledown

In regard to the Bridgerton books, the Lady Whistledown storyline is very different. Where Lady Whistledown is a massive part of Netflix’s Bridgerton television series, it is not quite the same in the books. If anything, Lady Whistledown really only comes into play during the fourth book, which is the installment focusing on Penelope and Colin. In it, Penelope is revealed as Lady Whistledown, not just to book readers, but to all the characters as well. After that, the Whistledown plot pretty much ends. Therefore, it seems likely that Bridgerton season 3 will see Penelope’s identity finally revealed.

In the end, it seems likely that all these details are part of Bridgerton season 3’s plan. It is likely purposeful that Lady Whistledown is changing her ways in order for Penelope’s identity to come out. Truthfully, it would be strange for Penelope and Colin to end up together without that secret coming to light. Therefore, it may be risky, but Penelope will have to come clean in Bridgerton season 3 in order to mend her broken relationships and become her true self.
