J.J. Abrams Reveals He Initially Wanted to Decline 'The Force Awakens'

Star Wars is undoubtedly one of the most important franchises of all time. The world of Star Wars is a truly amazing and exceptionally large fictional universe, and despite the fact that Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm led to a larger revamp of the canon and non-canon works, most fans still rely on the old distinctions, which is far more inclusive and expansive than the current, official canon which has been significantly reduced by Disney.

Despite the fans constantly complaining about the current state of the franchise, Star Wars projects are still doing very well and the whole situation is more than great as far as the future is concerned. But, in this report, we are going to go back in time a bit.

Namely, we are going to revisit the movie that started the Star Wars revival, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. In an interview he gave to /Film, the director revealed how he got involved with the project and that he almost declined to direct the movie.

In the interview he gave to /Film, J.J. Abrams discussed how he got involved with Star Wars, especially in light of the fact that he had worked on the Star Trek revival series; the Star Trek movies were quite good, but the production issues seemingly influenced Abrams at the time, as he almost declined to direct the movie:

“When Kathy Kennedy called and asked if I’d be interested in directing this film, I fully intended to say no, because I’ve been involved in other movies that were sequels, and I just thought I didn’t want to do that again. But it was ‘Star Wars,’ and I knew Kathy.”

Of course, The Force Awakens was a success, and it successfully revived the Star Wars franchise, although not everyone is happy with what came later. Be that as it may, Abrams left his mark on the franchise in a very positive way. He also revealed, in the documentary related to the production of the movie, that the character of Rey was what actually motivated him to reconsider his initial decision:

“When we were discussing it, there was this one moment that I instantly had the chills considering, which was: a young woman, what her story is, I had no idea. But saying, ‘Where’s Luke Skywalker?’ It was so titillating, the notion that this character who we all know would be discovered by some new young heroine. [It] was incredibly intriguing. It just felt to me like that was a great starting point for a story.”

And that is, more or less, the whole story related to Abrams becoming a part of the Star Wars franchise.
