Amazon Prime Video’s My Lady Jane arrived for its first season in June 2024, but will the anachronistic historical fiction series be renewed for a second season? Based on the eponymous book series by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, My Lady Jane re-imagines the life of Lady Jane Grey who was crowned the Queen of England for 9 days in 1553 before being executed. In the fictional version, Lady Jane is still crowned queen, but she is also persecuted for her connection to a fantastical group of people who can transform themselves into animals at will.

Shows like Bridgerton have helped to make anachronistic historical shows popular in recent years, but My Lady Jane takes things one step further by not only changing history but adding magic as well. The real-life Jane Grey’s life was a fascinating story on its own, but the Prime Video show’s magical changes give the tale more legs which could continue into additional episodes. As the closing narration of season 1’s final episode teased, Lady Jane is not out of the woods even though she and her husband narrowly avoided their executions.

My Lady Jane Season 2 Is Not Confirmed

Amazon Prime Hasn’t Renewed The Show Yet

This isn’t unusual in the era of streaming TV, and series aren’t reliant on explosive debuts, but instead on the long term viewership numbers.

Though My Lady Jane has all the makings of a multi-season hit for Amazon Prime Video, the streamer hasn’t made any moves regarding season 2 yet. Fortunately for fans of the anachronistic historical fantasy series, the series isn’t intended to be a one-off, and the door was left wide open for more after the inconclusive finale of season 1. Amazon is likely waiting to weigh their options before proceeding with more seasons.

Unlike recent Prime Video smash hits like Fallout, audiences are arriving fresh to My Lady Jane, and it will take a while for the show to build a genuine audience. This isn’t unusual in the era of streaming TV, and series aren’t reliant on explosive debuts, but instead on the long term viewership numbers. As more than one shocking streaming cancelation has proven, consistency is key for a modern TV series, and My Lady Jane could certainly build upon its positive reviews and through word of mouth.

As is usually the case with historical fiction series, the cast of My Lady Jane is a healthy mix of real-life figures and pseudo-fictional approximations. Even after an exciting climax in season 1, most of the cast could return to reprise their roles, excepting Will Keen’s Duke of Norfolk who found himself at the wrong end of a crossbow bolt fired by Princess Mary (Kate O’Flynn). The most logical return would be that of Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey, and her beau, Lord Guildford Dudley, should once again be played by Edward Bluemel.

The presumptive cast of My Lady Jane season 2 includes:

Though Amazon Prime Video hasn’t billed My Lady Jane as a limited series, the first season has exhausted the source material of its eponymous novel. However, the ending clearly left the door open for more, as Lady Jane and Guildford escaped persecution, but only temporarily. While it would be possible to leave things off there, with Lady Jane escaping her historically pre-ordained fate and being with Guildford and the rest of the Ethians, that wouldn’t be very satisfying. With Princess Mary still out for Ethian blood, it’s clear that the couple’s escape would be short-lived.

On the other hand, a second season of My Lady Jane could turn to the book series by Hand, Ashton, and Meadows, which switches to a new historical or fictional figure for each installment. Book 2 puts a feminist and fantastical spin on Charlotte Brontë’s classic character, Jane Eyre, while book 2 re-imagines Western icon Calamity Jane. Season 2 of My Lady Jane could take an anthology approach and adapt another book, perhaps even retaining the original cast in new roles.
