The Emmy-nominated star initially had doubts if he could pull off and survive the project after he was met with struggles on the set. Transforming into The Ghoul was not a comfortable situation, and that has affected the actor’s confidence.

Walton Goggins Almost Gave Up On Playing The Ghoul

During his interview with Josh Horowitz via the Happy Sad Confused podcast, actor Walton Goggins confessed his frustration on the set of Fallout. On Day 1 of filming, he already was feeling the anxiety of not being able to do his job properly.

The first day that we did it, it was like 106 degrees in New York. I was in this makeup, we walked out for the first time knowing that we’re going to work, right? This is it. I’m going on camera, and I have all of the stuff on with all of the clothing on for the first time where everything was on all at once.

As the actor put on his costume, makeup, and prosthetics, he noticed that he could not really see through his mask. “My peripheral vision is compromised, and I’m just kind of making my way down,” he revealed.

This incident evoked fear in him that he thought to himself, “Oh my God, I’m gonna fail these people who believed in me. I don’t know how to do this.” Goggins admitted in the interview that he genuinely said, “I don’t know if I can do this. I don’t think I can.”

In the end, he was able to compose himself. “You just relax into it, and you don’t complain, and you just keep your head down,” he quipped. The actor recalled the greatest lesson he learned, and that is to put “one foot in front of the other.”

Walton Goggins was very impressed with the script of Fallout written by 2018’s Tomb Raider scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet. He shared via Screen Rant that he loved the story, and that’s why he agreed to do it.

Wherever the best stories are and whatever opportunities I’m given, that’s where I gravitate. Game adaptations are the best they’ve ever been, and I think we’re in a golden age of that type of storytelling.

The actor noted how incredible the authors of the games are because of the nuances placed in every detail. He also described the game as “a four-dimensional experience for the player” which made sense to him

Goggins further added that his dual characters Cooper Howard and The Ghoul are quite different from each other. In this situation, the actor’s skill and range were tested, and he successfully nailed it. No wonder many fans believe he is one of the most talented yet underrated actors in Hollywood.

Fallout is available to watch on Prime Video.
