Mother! caused intense controversy and criticism upon its release in 2017. The main reason for this was the brutal violence and suffering depicted towards the protagonist, Jennifer Lawrence, that sharply divided fans. In the movie, the actress portrayed the nameless character known as Mother.

In order to play this role, the actress had to leave behind her sharp wit and straightforward demeanor. Further, shifting every element of her personality to play a role that sharply contrasted with her true self and previously played characters. Despite the movie’s polarizing reception, Lawrence admitted in several interviews that being a part of Mother! was incredibly challenging.

Further, in an interview (via Entertainment Weekly) when asked if she would take on a similar role again or participate in a sequel to Mother! The actress firmly denied it and added:

No. I don’t regret it. I’m happy I did it. If I had to do it again? If there was a mother! sequel? [Laughs] No. I wouldn’t be able to do it again. I did it once and I gave it my all.

Interestingly, to prepare for a particularly intense scene in Mother! Jennifer Lawrence listened to Beyoncé’s Lemonade album.

Although Lawrence does not regret her involvement in the film, the emotional and physical challenges she experienced played a significant role in her decision not to take on such demanding roles in the future.
