During an interview with FirstPost, Goggins explained how he prepared to play the character’s past and present personalities. He said:

“I read the script 250 times and that’s a lot of reading. You do the math. So it’s always in my head. It’s always in my imagination.”

Additionally, Goggins watched a lot of Western movies, especially during the lengthy makeup sessions. Goggins used the films as a reference point for the goals and motivations of the Cooper Howard persona of his characters.

“I just went through and made a playlist, you know, of maybe 50, 60, 70 songs that is just always kind of on in the background.”

Goggins made the above statement underlining the efforts he took to play the character. The Justified actor compared the process of using music to get into his character to reading a novel about them. Given the excrement lengths, Goggins went to embody the character, it is safe to say that the actor unknowingly veered into the method-acting territory.

During the same interview, Goggins also spoke about how long it took to craft the peculiar look of his character, particularly his The Ghoul form, which depicts him as mutate without a nose. Goggins explained that the process of crafting his look in Fallout was a long and tedious one despite the creative team having an idea of how they wanted the character to appear.

“Well, we took five months to come up with it, you know, even though they had, they had pictures of it. They had pictures of them, a goal from, from the game. But that was only a starting off point. And I, and I think that may have been kind of the extreme version of it.”

Goggins made the above statement explaining how the process of creating his look started off. However, the actor noted that the creative team quickly decided that they wanted the character to still resemble his real look.
