‘Dune’ has been a huge success at the box office, so the Dennis Villeneuve saga has a bright future. What can we expect from it?
‘Dune: part two’ is being a huge success with critics and the public. The second installment of the Denis Villeneuve saga that adapts the literary work of Frank Herbert, a true science fiction classic, is exceeding all expectations, and its not like we had small hopes after the first part. What ‘Dune’ covers in the books is gigantic, and that is why many wonder what the number of films there will be, since Herbert published six novels, while his son and other authors have released more than a dozen books around the rich universe that the original book proposed. The first two films are based on the first book, ‘Dune’ (1965); while Villeneuve’s idea is to adapt the second book, ‘Dune Messiah’ (1969), into the third installment of the saga.
In a press conference in 2021, Villeneuve said: “The thing I envision, the adaptation of two books, Dune and Dune Messiah. We decided to split the first novel in two, so now we are at three movies. Those movies are very long to make. For my mental sanity, I decided to just dream about three movies.” This idea is not entirely crazy, as the second ‘Dune’ book has about 300 pages compared to the more than 600 that the first installment has.
When will ‘Dune: Part Three’ come out?
The third installment will adapt ‘Dune Messiah’, the second book by Frank Herbert, and Denis Villeneuve has already confirmed that he is working on the adaptation, but does not know the release date. We may have to wait until 2028 or even 2030, as the director could take a rest before fully resuming the third installment of the saga.
