He was staying away from the Greens for as long as he could — ironically, that’s a huge green flag.
House of the Dragon season 2 is getting a bigger force for the Blacks while they keep seeking new Dragonseeds, but it seems like a forgotten Targaryen may soon give the Greens a helping hand in the upcoming battles.
The second installment’s episode 6 subtly hinted at the possibility of Daeron Targaryen’s return home after years away from the rest of his family in Oldtown. The show has never featured the character’s physical appearance before, though it may change soon, considering that mentions of him become more and more frequent among the royal family members.
Though those unfamiliar with George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood might panic at the thought of another Green member on the horizon, this may change as well when they realize that staying away from Alicent is actually a blessing rather than a curse.
In both Fire & Blood and House of the Dragon, Daeron is King Viserys I and Alicent Hightower’s third son and fourth child.
Raised by his mother’s relatives in Oldtown, far from King’s Landing’s castle, Daeron surely secured himself at least a stable mental condition since he was the only one to grow up without any influence of Alicent’s oppressive nature, unlike his siblings who weren’t that lucky.
In House of the Dragon season 2, Daeron’s reunion with his family is hinted at several times, first when Otto Hightower gets dismissed as Hand of King and goes back to Oldtown, where he presumably convinces his grandson to help his mother ahead of the war (the show doesn’t mention this, but the book is pretty clear about the whole matter).
In the series’ latest episode, Daeron’s name is brought up a second time, during a conversation between Alicent and her brother Gwayne.
Gwayne asks his sister if she was aware of how things were going for Daeron, as his letters became more and more scarce over time. Apart from that, he gives a pretty intriguing description of Alicent’s youngest son, saying that Daeron is stalwart, clever and kind, something that cannot really be said about Alicent’s other heirs, Aegon and Aemond.
Gwayne’s praise for his estranged nephew clearly shows how a different environment where the latter grew up eventually gave him a huge benefit of not being like the rest of the Greens.
Though at some point Daeron does join Alicent’s forces to fight against Rhaenyra, he doesn’t follow his brothers’ suit trying to plot against his own relatives in an attempt to seize power.
Quite the contrary, Daeron sticks to very different principles — complete honesty and loyalty to his firm beliefs.
Sadly, even his obvious advantage over the rest of his family can’t save him from the tragic fate of most of the Greens.
