In the fiery drama of House of the Dragon Season 2, Eve Best’s character, Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, brings to life a chilling prediction she first voiced in Season 1. She warns, “Men would sooner put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend to the Iron Throne.”

As the series goes on, that line hits home with all the power plays and family drama around Rhaenyra Targaryen’s throne bid, threatening Aegon, Aemond, Criston Cole, and even Daemon. This completely shakes up old Targaryen ways, mixing fantasy with real-life politics and family stuff. Speaking of backstabbing and rivalries, Best reveals in a HOTD interview, via The Guardian,

It is rather depressingly resonant – not just with British politics but with what’s going on all over the world. All kinds of outmoded, corrupt, toxic systems are unravelling, imploding and being dismantled. That feels like Westeros territory.

Behind the scenes, the 52-year-old spills the beans on the super-secret auditions for House of the Dragon, where they kept everything under wraps, even the show’s name. Hooked by the script and her character’s big role, she got sucked into the story’s gripping drama.

Everything was very secretive. To audition, we were initially sent a scene from the original Game of Thrones with the names changed. When eventually I was sent a real script, I loved the writing. Ryan [Condal] and Miguel [Sapochnik, co-showrunners] hooked me in immediately with the driving theme of the series.

In the drama series, we explored power plays and loyalty twists, and Best’s role adds layers to how we see gender and politics. Beyond her diverse career and advocacy for older women in showbiz, Eve Best stands out with grit and imagination, making her mark both on screen and behind the scenes as a storyteller.

House of the Dragon: How does Rhaenys Targaryen die in the books?

As House of the Dragon blazes through its dramatic second season, all eyes are on the fate of Rhaenys Targaryen. With the season two finale dropping a banger, fans who’ve devoured George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood can’t help but speculate about what’s next for her.

In the books, Rhaenys backs Rhaenyra Targaryen in the brutal Dance of the Dragons war. She’s a fierce warrior queen, riding her awesome dragon Meleys into battle against Aegon and Aemond Targaryen on their own fiery beasts. Even though she was outnumbered and outmatched, Rhaenys meets her end alongside her dragon, leaving Aegon Targaryen badly hurt.

But here’s the kicker: according to the books, Rhaenys stared fate in the face, choosing a warrior’s exit over a slow decline. Yet her body is never found, adding a tantalizing mystery to her final moments. Will the creators of House of the Dragon stick to the original tale, or will they throw us a curveball and rewrite Rhaenys’ fate?
