Now the show not following the original book might become a pretty justified thing.
House of the Dragon ’s season 2 is getting closer to its finale with only 3 episodes left, and some major plot twists potentially coming sometime until the last episode is dropped may finally unveil the show’s biggest mystery of who will eventually survive the approaching war.
Those who got familiar with George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, upon which House of the Dragon is based, are by now well aware of how everything will change for both the Blacks and the Greens, yet the series is still very likely to follow its own path without paying that much attention to the original source.
However, the entire history of the Targaryens still remains a secret since Fire & Blood doesn’t cover all the events that lead to what Game of Thrones featured before, but the latter’s prequel seemingly foreshadowed a major death that Martin himself still has nothing to tell about.
In House of the Dragon’s season 2 episode 5 titled Regent, Baela Targaryen is brought back to the main stage, with her grandfather Lord Corlys Velaryon getting closer to a firm decision to proclaim Baela his heiress.
The two are seen having a conversation about their family’s gone members after Baela informs Corlys of Rhaenyra’s wish to name him Hand of the Queen. She then suddenly opens up about her desire to die like a real dragonrider — that is, by being burnt or brought down during a fight.
Baela’s confessions in the episode may come as a major spoiler which the show has come up with on its own since the character’s death doesn’t have a single mention in Martin’s Fire & Blood.
Considering that the novel comes to its end right after the Dance of the Dragons is over, also covering a part of the reign of Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III, it’s safe to say we may expect more details about those who eventually survived the war in Fire & Blood’s second volume, yet it also may take years for the part 2 to arrive to bookstores.
For now, Baela’s fate and the way she actually dies remains another mystery, but it also signals a possibility of her outliving most of the Blacks and the Greens’ members and potentially having an impact on Aegon III’s reign.
