Aegon’s reign now mirrors his father’s, but not in its best way.
House of the Dragon season 2 is getting closer to a full-scale war with one of the Greens’ major players out of the league, and it seems like the character has already stepped onto his predecessor’s path without yet realizing how sorrowful all the repercussions will be.
The second installment’s episodes 5 and 6 see Aemond Targaryen getting comfortable on his brother’s spot as the King after Aegon is left with no other choice but to remain bedridden recovering from severe injuries.
The show is yet to unveil what the latter’s fate has prepared for him and whether it will be similar to what George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood talks about, but so far the character’s position may garner him some sympathizing voices, and it has nothing to do with his loss of power.
Entering the scene as a flippant heir convinced of his ability to get away with whatever he wishes to do, Aegon clearly had no clue about how hard karma was about to hit him in House of the Dragon season 2.
The first episode featured a horrifying sequence of his little son’s murder in his own cradle, leaving no doubts that Aegon had to face another major problem after losing his only heir.
What happened next was most likely Aegon’s personal reckless decision, yet he still had little time to mourn his murdered child as he took his dragon Sunfyre for a walk, which resulted in both Aegon and Rhaenys’ failure after Aemond’s unexpected attack.
Now unable to remain a ruler as he was, Aegon is surely getting closer to his bitter demise after losing all the respect and authority even over his own men.
Ironically, Aegon would probably be glad to follow his father Viserys I’s suit, but right now he does so while heading in a completely wrong direction. Despite being proclaimed as one of the wisest rulers in Westerosi history, Viserys couldn’t rely on his power as something that could potentially save him from a series of tragedies he had to experience.
Just like his son Aegon, Viserys suffered the loss of his first male heir when both his wife Aemma and his newborn son died after hard labor. Additionally, Viserys’ health kept rapidly deteriorating once he cut his finger while sitting on the Iron Throne, eventually causing him to slowly die over the course of the first season.
Compared to what his father went through, Aegon’s fate is still way worse since the injuries he’d got during the battle robbed him of his youth and will most likely take the rest of his life.
Should House of the Dragon stay away from the original narrative and let Aegon die by the time season 2 concludes, the war will gain even more chances to become the end of it all for both the Blacks and the Greens who are now ruled by inexperienced Rhaenyra and overly reckless Aemond.
