Nolan and his team did a lot of preemptive work for future Fallout seasons.
The Fallout TV show‘s executive producers may not have known how the show would be received when it was released, but they were ambitious enough to plan for future seasons.
In a recent interview, executive producer Jonathan Nolan and co-showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner spoke about how they tried to balance injecting plot into the show without it seeming surface-level, as well as hinting at their plans for Season 2.
Fallout Showrunners Planned for More, but Had to Scale Back
There’s a lot to cover in the Fallout universe, but not enough time
During the interview with The Wrap, when discussing the planning of the first season, Robertson-Dworet revealed that their initial plan was to include a lot of iconic elements from the game’s universe.
However, they soon realized that an eight-hour show wouldn’t allow a proper integration of 25 years worth of mythology.
We didn’t want the show to seem like it was written by people who just spent 10 seconds reading the Wikipedia page for ‘Fallout’ and didn’t bother to bring in some deeper cuts.
The co-showrunners spoke about the importance of including “deeper cuts” in Season 1 to appeal to both casual viewers and die-hard fans of the franchise.
Hopefully, that won’t piss off fans because we didn’t get to every last thing, but hopefully, they will bear with us and pray with us that we get a second season to bring these things to the screen.
After the series made its debut, fans were ecstatic to see how the iconic gaming franchise was translated to the small screen. Nolan, Robertson-Dworet, and Wagner’s collaborative efforts paid off, if general sentiment is anything to go off of.
Future Seasons Were Being Accounted for While Making Season 1
The Fallout TV show producers had to think beyond just the first season when mapping the story
From the earliest stages of development, the creative team has been thinking about the trajectory of the Fallout universe beyond Season 1. Considering they covered an entirely new story within the universe, it would’ve been extremely important to be clear on future plans.
They were focused on delivering an exceptional first season, of course, but Nolan mentioned that it was also important to consider the show’s potential for continuation:
The challenge, especially with television, is in success, the hope that you get to go again.
For him, it was important to consider how the story could evolve in future seasons, without taking away from the one they were working on:
It would be remiss, almost irresponsible, to not have started to talk about where your story could take you.
The showrunners were able to bring a lot of their ideas to fruition, and Season 2 might hold even more juicy Easter Eggs for die-hard fans.
If there’s one thing you could change about their approach in Season 1, what would it be? And what are some of the Fallout‘s elements that you’d like to see in Season 2? Feel free to tell us in the comments below!
