Hiroyuki Sanada rumoured to be in Ghost of Tsushima’s film adaptation
The film adaptation of the game Ghost of Tsushima is currently being discussed. A film adaptation of the game was first announced by Sony back in March 2021, and it has been a mystery since. It was later reported that Chad Stahelski would be directing it. Stahelski is also on board to produce alongside Alex Young and Jason Spitz of 87Eleven Entertainment.
It is rumored that Hiroyuki Sanada is in talks with Stahelski, to be a part of the film. He was most recently seen in the Japanese historical Drama, Shogun, where he plays the role of Yoshi Toranaga. Although the role Sanada is eyed for has not yet been disclosed, fans are excited to see him as Lord Shimura in the film.

The fans of the game are likely to be drawn towards the world of Shogun, and vice-versa, given the similarities between the two worlds.

Sanada has previously appeared in other films like The Last Samurai, Rush Hour 3, and Avengers: Endgame. More recently, he’s had roles in movies like Army of the Dead, Bullet Train, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Mortal Kombat.
Sanada and Stahelski have previously worked together in John Wick, which makes their collaboration for Ghost of Tsushima even more exciting. Not many details are shared regarding the film’s casting, as of now, but you can soon expect an announcement from Sony, revealing the film’s final cast and crew and potential release date.

Sanada will be returning in Mortal Combat 2, where he plays the role of Scorpio. Mortal Combat 2 was recently given a release date and is set to premiere during the fall. Sanada might also return in some episodes of Shogun, as season 2 of the show is currently in talks but not confirmed.

The role that Sanada would be portraying in Ghost of Tsushima is not yet confirmed. He is expected to be seen as Lord Shimura or Sensei Ishikawa. The 63-year-old Japanese actor is set to be a part of Tsushima’s world, but without a face, as of now.
Shogun’s recent success has paved the way for Japanese culture to make a place in people’s hearts. Sanada played the most pivotal role in the series with utmost finesse and is now expected to bring his expertise to Ghost of Tsushima’s film adaptation. He has collaborated with Stahelski before and shares a great relationship with him. Their last collaboration in John Wick 4 was a massive success and we can hope for the same this time around as well.
