A sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was seemingly confirmed, with director Adam Wingard returning to the Monsterverse. The film reunites the Titans following their immense battle and subsequent partnership in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and features a cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Fala Chen, and Dan Stevens. Released in March, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire garnered positive reactions from moviegoers and kaiju fans. Wingard discussed a potential follow-up, and given the film’s commercial success, generating more than $500 million globally, it’s likely the franchise will continue.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, though Wingard does not have a deal regarding the future Godzilla x Kong sequel, he will return for the next Monsterverse installment. However, he’s currently working on the film Onslaught, which was bought by A24 and will take precedence.

Various creatures were introduced in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, including Suko and the combative Skar King, whose existence revealed more about Kong and Hollow Earth. Exploring the background of Titans and the Iwi, and learning about their respective roles, Dr. Ilene Andrews and Jia also manage to resurrect Mothra. Near the end of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, another Titan, Shimo, becomes free of the Skar King and returns alongside Kong, who is now leading the Apes.

With the potential involvement of other kaiju, and establishing just how powerful Godzilla can be, a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire seems probable. Wingard previously shared some of his ideas for a sequel, which focused on giving Godzilla more story and demonstrating what kind of authority Kong would have over the Apes. Despite his comments and prior Monsterverse experience, having also directed Godzilla vs. Kong, it’s worth mentioning that Legendary and Warner Bros. haven’t announced any future plans.

Because of the film’s impressive box office performance, along with this latest report, it will be interesting to see if and/or when an official sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire gets developed. With the success of Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Wingard not revealing whether a crossover could happen, there is even more anticipation for what comes next.
