“Dreams didn’t make us kings, dragons did.”
This summer we’re all frozen in anticipation for the new episodes of HBO’s House of the Dragon. However, you won’t need to spend your time just waiting if you delve into the theme of fire-breathing magical creatures with today’s list.
Here are 6 dragon flicks that will amaze every HotD fan, picked by Redditors.
1. Reign of Fire (2002)
First comes the most notorious dragon film of all time that takes a magical concept to a modern setting in a very terrifying way. Starring Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey, it follows the aftermath of the dragon’s appearance in a deep mine.
2. Dragonheart (1996)
The next choice is a film that blends fantasy, drama, buddy movie and action elements and does it impeccably. The story of a heroic dragon (voiced by Sean Connery) who dares to share his heart to keep a relentless human prince alive is really captivating.
3. Damsel (2024)
Next comes this year’s top-tier dark fantasy that has the star of Netflix ’s Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown, playing a young woman who enters a marriage of convenience only to realize she is being used as a sacrifice to appease a terrible dragon.
4. Jabberwocky (1977)
This entry offers a mix of Monty Python’s classic comedy and surreal fantasy that surprisingly makes up an immersing tale of a cooper’s apprentice forced to hunt a deadly serpent. It’s unique for its tone and memorable, yet awkward protagonist.
5. Dragonslayer (1981)
Even though it’s quite weird and maybe too straightforward, it’s still a cultish dragon flick that displays a surprising amount of gore. Set in a fictional medieval kingdom, this must-watch focuses on a young wizard in his attempt to hunt down an ancient dragon.
6. Q: The Winged Serpent (1982)
Last movie on today’s list follows a swindler, who accidentally awakens a winged monster that threatens to ruin New York City, and artfully blends realism and fantasy leitmotif.
