The East Blue saga has great moments, such as Mihawk vs. Zoro or Nami’s origin story, but it is only after the Straw Hat enters the Grand Line that One Piece really begins. Luffy and his friends will now be going up against the world’s biggest, most powerful pirates, as well as many other threats. Despite defeating villains like Kuro and Arlong in season 1, Luffy has only shown a fraction of his power in the live-action One Piece series. Luffy has quite a few tricks that haven’t appeared yet, including his Gear transformations.
What Will Luffy’s Gear 3 Shrunken Form Look Like In Live-Action?
Luffy’s body shrinks after using Gear 3
Luffy has a series of transformations under his belt in One Piece, which are referred to as “Gear” and are followed by a number. While Gear 1 is not technically a transformation, it refers to Luffy’s original set of rubber powers, most of which were featured in Netflix’s One Piece season 1. His first notable transformation, however, is Gear 2, a powerup that made its debut during the Enies Lobby arc when Luffy was fighting Rob Lucci to save Nico Robin. Shortly after their first encounter, Lucci and Luffy would engage in an even bigger fight.

This is when One Piece debuted Gear 3, which sees Luffy inflating portions of his body to throw massively powerful punches and kicks, or to enhance his strength. Before his Haki training, Luffy could only use Gear 3 for so long, and the transformation had a hilarious side effect. After using Gear 3, Luffy’s body would shrink to the size of a child. He would remain as such for several minutes before his body returned to normal, resulting in some hilarious scenes that work perfectly in animation form but might be challenging in live-action.
When Luffy’s Gear 3 Will Appear In Netflix’s One Piece
Enies Lobby might take a couple of seasons
Assuming that Netflix’s One Piece will go on for multiple seasons and keep the pace of the first one, it will not take too long for Luffy’s Gear 3 to debut in live-action. With One Piece season 2 covering Arabasta, which is longer than East Blue but can work as an eight-episode season, season 3 would get to cover the Sky Island saga. Unless One Piece rushes through the divisive Sky Island saga, the events of Water 7 and Enies Lobby might only happen in a potential season 4.Water 7 and Enies Lobby are some of the best One Piece arcs but also some of its most important, with twists and moments that continue to impact the story to this day. The Gear 2 and Gear 3 reveal was quite surprising and indicated that Luffy was much stronger than viewers imagined, leading to a great battle between him and Lucci for the fate of Nico Robin. Should Enies Lobby ever be adapted into live-action, it will be interesting to see what shrunken Luffy will look like.
Luffy’s Powers & Transformations Will Only Get Weirder In One Piece
One Piece’s world is full of creative transformations
Luffy’s Gum-Gum fruit powers looked great in One Piece season 1, and it is safe to say the live-action show has nailed the rubber body look that other movies and TV shows have struggled to get right. His powers will only get weirder as One Piece progresses, which is exciting. One of the most special things about One Piece is how its world and power scale are significantly more unpredictable than that of other anime. The world of One Piece is very large, and each island the Straw Hats visit features some surprises.
The first appearance of Gear 2 and Gear 3 in Netflix’s One Piece has the potential to be a historical moment for the show if done right. Likewise, if the live-action series ever gets to adapt One Piece’s post-time skip arcs, Luffy’s other transformations will look even cooler. For now, something like live-action Gear 5 Luffy is just a distant possibility. However, there will be plenty of opportunities for Netflix’s One Piece to feature incredible powers and transformations that appear in the Arabasta saga onward – and not just Luffy’s.
