A composite image of The Ghoul leering down at someone in front of Lucy leaving her vault in the Fallout TV showPrime Video’s ambitious adaptation of Fallout has already impressed critics and viewers alike, and the video game series is already renewed for season 2. The show is adapted from the video game franchise of the same name by Bethesda which follows an unnamed traveler in a Cold War pastiche nuclear post-apocalyptic wasteland. Though the game description seems rather simple, it is the tremendous lore and exhilarating RPG action that made Fallout so beloved, and the retrofuturistic style was ripe for adaptation into a TV show or movie.

Quickly becoming one of the most highly-anticipated gaming adaptations when Amazon Prime Video announced they were tackling Bethesda’s crown jewel, each successive update only heightened the Fallout fan hysteria. When the show finally arrived in April 2024, Fallout more than lived up to expectations and delivered a faithful recreation of the unique game that earned high marks from critics (via Rotten Tomatoes). Even before the 8-episode first season premiered, speculation was already swirling regarding a second season of Fallout, and season 1’s success necessitated a quick renewal.

Though a production start time is elusive, and a release date won’t come for sometime, the showrunners are pleased with Fallout s eason 2’s progress.

With a second season guaranteed, the latest news comes in the form of a production update for Fallout season 2. Hesitant to commit to any specific timeline, showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet assured fans that work is being done to bring the video game adaptation back as quickly as possible. Wagner said “we are going as fast as we possibly can, and we’ve got a lot of heavy lifting from Season 1 already done,” suggesting writing is well underway. Though a production start time is elusive, and a release date won’t come for sometime, the showrunners are pleased with Fallout season 2’s progress.

Read Wagner and Robertson-Dworet’s comments below:

WAGNER: The internet has an interesting habit of making non-binding statements binding, so I’m hesitant to give a date that will be taken out of context and live on Reddit for a year or so. But we are going as fast as we possibly can, and we’ve got a lot of heavy lifting from Season 1 already done. We have sets, assets, visual effects, that are already done. We are hitting the ground running this season. We’re going to be pedal to the metal to get season two out as fast as humanly possible.

ROBERTSON-DWORET: And there are so many things we wanted to do in Season 1 where we were like, “That would be amazing, let’s do that in Season 2.” So it feels like we’re so much farther along and it’s honestly really exciting and we’re just really grateful to have the opportunity to bring to the screen all the things that didn’t quite fit in Season 1. We’re excited to get to now do those now.

Fallout Season 2 Is Confirmed

It Took One Week To Renew Fallout

Unlike other series, the renewal status of Fallout was never really in any jeopardy and Amazon Prime Video opted to order a second season only a week after the show debuted. The overwhelming viewership numbers of season 1 made it one of Prime Video’s most-watched shows ever, and with so much to build on, it comes as no surprise Amazon jumped at the opportunity to promise more episodes.

Will Any Of The Cast Members Return?

Perhaps the hardest thing to speculate on for Fallout season 2 is the cast, and that is largely because the direction of the series is uncertain. There has been talk about making Fallout season 2 an anthology, much like the games, which would mean the cast would probably be replaced going forward. Each installment in the gaming series is set in a different location in the Fallout universe, and it would be logical for the show to follow suit. On the other hand, the depth put into the characters wouldn’t likely be thrown away after only 8 episodes, meaning some should return.

The most logical returns for Fallout season 2 include:

Will Fallout Season 2 Be An Anthology?

Snip Snip (Matt Berry) floats in a blown out kitchen in Fallout

Though there have been hints about making Fallout season 2 an anthology like the games, the ending of season 1 left a lot of business unsettled. However, it’s possible that both things could be true as the second season could introduce a new main character who could find their story interwoven with Lucy’s quest to track down her father who has apparently fled to New Vegas.

On top of that, The Ghoul’s search for his wife and daughter is only just getting started, and Maximus’ promise to find Lucy means the next season will likely have three chase plots going on at once. Another main character added to the mix would make the sophomore season rather busy, but the writers proved themselves to be deft at mixing multiple storylines in season 1. Regardless of the specifics, Fallout season 2 will be jam-packed with wasteland action.
