DC has a Zack Snyder problem. No matter how much people joke about the so-called Snyderverse, it obviously had a sizable number of fans—fans who feel abandoned by Warner Bros. and the way the company abruptly ended the DCEU, leaving several plot threads dangling. There’s a way, however, that DC could satisfy those fans’ desire for closure right now without spending a billion dollars on another Zack Snyder’s Justice League: close out the Snyderverse with a comic book.
A Way To Please The Snyder Bros
It’s obvious that DC Studios isn’t going to fire James Gunn anytime soon, what with the DCU set to make its proper debut next year with Superman. On the other hand, it can’t be fun having Snyder-bro trolls constantly complaining about Henry Cavill getting replaced and whatever else they regularly bark about on X. A comic book continuation of the Snyderverse from DC written by Zack Snyder could be the key to finally calming down those trolls once and for all.
Snyder Already Has The Plan In Mind
Synder has stated in several interviews over the years that he had a clear plan for where his DC universe would have gone after Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Allowing the Rebel Moon director to turn that plan into a limited series or ongoing comic would be a cost-effective way for DC to finish the story that began over a decade ago in Man of Steel (2013). There’s certainly precedent for it.
It’s Been Done Before
In recent years, DC has released the comic books Batman ’89, Superman ’78, and Batman ’66—all three titles serving as sequels to their respective movie/TV incarnations. Before that, Dark Horse Comics published a comic book in 2007 titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, which continued Joss Whedon’s iconic TV series. Doing something similar with the Snyderverse seems like a no-brainer.
Zack Snyder’s Knightmare
DC could name the book Zack Snyder’s Knightmare after the post-apocalyptic scenario set up at the end of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. There’s no conceivable way that such a project would lose money, either. Both fans of the Snyderverse and its most vehement detractors would flock to the comic store to pick up a Zack Snyder DC book.
The fans so that they could finally get a proper ending to their favorite comic book movie universe, and the non-fans so that they could read it and then jump on TikTok or YouTube and talk about how much it sucks. Either way, DC makes money. The publicity alone would be enough to generate hundreds of clickbait articles.
It Just Makes Sense
Even comic fans who don’t care about the DC movies one way or another would probably pick up the book out of curiosity. Given the success of DC’s similar Injustice comic books—a continuity where Superman has gone evil, and Batman has to stop him, much like Zack Snyder’s Knightmare scenario—dystopian Elseworlds stories are fairly popular right now. We wouldn’t be surprised if a Snyderverse comic ended up being a bestseller.
Perhaps the best part as far as DC is concerned is that a Zack Snyder comic would in no way interfere with James Gunn’s new DCU. The Snyderverse could co-exist peacefully with Gunn’s new movie universe, and all corners of the DC fandom would get what they want.
DC has a unique opportunity to reunite its fanbase by putting out a comic based on Zack Snyder’s DC movies, and if the company is smart, they’ll take it.
