Could This Sweet Alicent and Helaena Moment Be Another Gut-Wrenching Prophecy?Image credit: HBO

You just never know for sure.

Even if some viewers don’t like the way House of the Dragon season 2 spends a lot of time with King Aegon and Team Green, it’s hard to argue that the writers are doing a good job of exploring their characters. All three of Alicent’s children, who didn’t get much screen time in season 1, get their chance to shine.

Helaena Targaryen, the only daughter of Alicent and King Viserys, has had a particularly tragic storyline after losing her son Jaehaerys to Blood and Cheese. And even when fans think they have had a sweet moment amid the darkness, thanks to Helaena’s dreamer powers, they cannot be sure that another blow is not coming next.

Does Helaena Targaryen See the Future?

While some viewers did not understand the parallels between Helaena’s prophecies and the events of House of the Dragon season 1, the writers made sure to keep her abilities very clear and straightforward in season 2. Before losing Jaehaerys, she tried to warn her husband Aegon about the danger of the rats but was once again dismissed.

Misunderstood again and again, Helaena has already predicted that her brother Aemond will lose his eye and that Rhaenys will fly up from the dragon’s lair and ruin King Aegon’s coronation. Now that viewers are forced to pay attention to everything she says, even the most heartfelt scenes have an ominous feel to them.

When Helaena tells Alicent that she forgives her in the third episode of the second season, it can be seen as a bonding moment between the mother and her only daughter. Since Jaehaerys’ death, we’ve known that Alicent has blamed herself and her sins for it, so hearing that Helaena forgives her must have been healing.

However, since this forgiveness came out of nowhere and was surprising even to Alicent herself, some viewers now think that it was not forgiveness for what we already know. Perhaps Helaena, who has a different vision of the future, is forgiving her mother for something she hasn’t even done yet.

Another idea is that Helaena’s forgiveness goes far beyond the death of her son. If she knows the prophecy, she may also know about her mother’s mistake in mixing up two Aegons and forgive her for it, even though it will eventually lead to a cruel war full of kinslaying that will take many more lives.

If you are interested in seeing how this scene will play out in future episodes of House of the Dragon season 2, be sure to tune in to HBO or Max every Sunday to not miss a thing.
