For Chris Hemsworth, transitioning into a villain for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was no easy feat.

The Thor: Love and Thunder star, 40, detailed his arduous and lengthy transformation into the villainous warlord Dr. Dementus — which included a prosthetic nose — for his new film with Anya Taylor-Joy, 28, in a new interview with Variety.

“I spent about four hours in the makeup chair,” Hemsworth told the outlet. “[I] was justifiably irritated by the end of it.”

However, he also joked that the irritation helped him onscreen. “That really helped my performance-there was a nice amount of pent-up rage simmering under the surface,” he said.

The actor previously told Entertainment Weekly that the film’s director George Miller had envisioned his character “to be this historic-looking Roman figure,” which is also why he dons a cape in the action film. While he said that people can draw similarities to his previous superhero character Thor, he enjoyed getting to step into the villain’s shoes this time.

“It’s not intentional to be a comparison of Thor,” said the actor, “but I found a wonderful departure to it — to play the villain, transform, and inhabit a completely different physicality was a lot of fun. I loved it. And it was the real attraction.”

Taylor-Joy also noted to the EW that his transformation was a big one, as “it’s one of the only times in my entire career that a male costar has been in the makeup chair for as long as I have.”

The Dune: Part Two actress also described her own make-up process on the film as “so much fun” during her conversation with Variety, and said viewers will get to see the “evolution” of her character Furiosa through her many looks. She revealed that she had been “excited” for one particular onscreen transformation.

“I was so excited to shave my head for this movie,” Taylor-Joy said in the interview. “George very quickly said, ‘It’s not going to work with our schedule and the fact that we have to follow the character through so many different stages in her life. It was just an incredible prosthetic.”

“And we also had a prosthetic that I could actually shave off because that was something that was really important to me,” she added.
