The Rings of Power is not that hopeless after all.
The Rings of Power is like a diamond that has been given to cut by not very skilled craftsmen, who have no idea of its true value.
Where the series crew fails, the fans come – Reddit users offered their own ways to improve the criticized show. It is unlikely that these tips will be seen and considered by anyone, but we can dream, right?
1. Fire the Showrunners
If you had a $1 billion project to make, would you put two rookies in charge who had never worked on anything this big? Jeffrey Bezos did just that. John D. Payne and Patrick McKay have no experience making fantasy projects or expensive TV series.
They only have one major film in their portfolio – Star Trek Beyond, which, let’s face it, was not very well made and did not do very well at the box office.
So the most obvious, if somewhat cruel, solution suggested by Reddit users is to change showrunners. And it’s hard to argue with that.
2. Change the Pace
First, the first two episodes of the show were made available for viewing, totaling about two hours. In two hours, you can show the viewer a full-length movie with a beginning, a climax, and an ending.
But in The Rings of Power, almost nothing significant happens in two hours. The first two episodes are devoted to incredibly long exposition, mostly built on leisurely dialogues that carry very little meaning.
The fans’ demand is obviously more dynamics and less long dialogues, which we may actually see in the second season.
3. Make Armor More Authentic
In most shots you can see where the huge budget of The Rings of Power went. The landscapes and scenery, whether filmed on location, recreated in CGI, or drawn with computer graphics, are amazing.
However, much of the armor in the series is almost as poorly made as the infamous “wrinkled” armor from the first season of Netflix ‘s The Witcher.
It’s not that the armor isn’t functional – in fantasy, aesthetics usually is more important than pragmatism. The armor of many characters looks much less impressive and detailed than we saw in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy more than 20 years ago.
So yes, the fans are absolutely right – the character armor needs huge improvements.
4. Make Elves More Elvish
Tolkien’s elves are not people with pointed ears and extended life spans. They see the world differently and are capable of experiencing a range of emotions inaccessible to human understanding.
Galadriel, who looks young but has lived for more than a thousand years when the events of the series begin, for some reason lowers herself to argue with a human and even allows herself to show emotion in a conversation with him. From the point of view of the logic of Tolkien’s world, this looks ridiculous.
Perhaps, as fans believe, it is worthwhile to invite more experts on Tolkien’s works to the series team in order to bring the elves closer to their book prototypes.
