If you thought you knew everything about Fallout — or that its world can’t get any weirder — here are the 10 most bizarre facts that will change your mind.
10. Aliens Exist, Kidnap People, & Love Toys
In the Fallout universe, not only do aliens exist but they’re pretty active. In Fallout 3’s DLC Mothership Zeta, you can even meet them in person! There are multiple recordings of their sightseeings, and here’s the most random thing about the Zeta aliens: they have a weird unexplained obsession with the Giddy Up Buttercup toys.
9. Ghosts Are Out There but They’re Rare
Believe it or not, ghosts also exist in the Fallout lore, and that has been canon since Fallout 2. In that game, there’s an entire quest where you help one of the ghosts by returning their pendent to them and burying their remains so that they can rest peacefully. But if you thought this was weird, brace yourself for the next revelation.
8. Lovecraftian Eldritch Gods Also Exist
Just when you decided that the Fallout universe couldn’t possibly house even more mythical beings, it’s strongly implied that the Lovecraftian Eldritch gods also have a place in that world — and have countless cults dedicated to them. From the Dunwich company to Ug-Qualtoth and the Interloper, there’s a lot of proof of their existence.
7. Anime Somehow Survived the Great War
Believe it or not, in the Fallout lore, anime existed, and bits of it even survived the Great War! In Fallout 2, if the player is wearing a power armor in New Reno, some of the prostitutes mention “seeing something like that in an anime video they saw.” Even the Earth’s complete nuclear devastation can’t stop the weebs, apparently.
6. Fallout Timeline Diverged from Ours Millennia Ago
It might appear like the Fallout timeline only diverged from ours in the 20th century, but that’s not true. In Fallout 4, we learn about the ancient Precursor civilization that went extinct in Fallout but has never existed in our world. That change allowed most of the Fallout history to be identical to ours but caused several timeline deviations.
5. Pre-War Gas Was Ridiculously Expensive
In Fallout, it’s easy to notice that most pre-war cars in America ran on small nuclear fusion cores. That didn’t only have to do with the technological advancements of that time: the price of gas in America before the war was around $7,000-8,000 per gallon. You wouldn’t want to use anything that runs on gas at times like these, would you?
4. Stealth Boys Drive Supermutants Insane
A Stealth Boy allows its user to become nearly invisible, giving them a great edge in combat. An invisible Supermutant is inherently much scarier than an invisible human, but there’s a catch: a prolonged use of a Steal Boy drives a Supermutant insane and paranoid, turning them into Nightkin despite Supermutants being stronger than us.
3. Unfortunately, the Enclave Has a Point
While the most insidious and downright evil faction in the Fallout universe, the Enclave is right about one thing: all humans who remained on the surface were affected by both radiation and the Forced Evolutionary Virus. That’s exactly why the Enclave calls most people “muties” — and exterminates them at every opportunity.
2. There Are Intelligent Deathclaws Out There
Deathclaws were created as a biological weapon against China by the US Army, but they were taken to the next level by the Enclave. The organization’s scientists created a batch of highly intelligent Deathclaws that were not just sentient but genuinely thinking — and while most were destroyed, some might still be out there.
1. NCR and BoS Had a Massive War
Before the events of the TV show, the New California Republic and the Brotherhood of Steel had a huge war. The Brotherhood was losing, forced into hiding — but the NCR also took massive losses, especially economically. But with the destruction of the NCR capital Shady Sands, it seems like the Brotherhood’s reign over the American Wasteland has fully started, with this faction rapidly expanding its territory.
