As The Last of Us season 2 finally starts filming, a new photo from behind the scenes shows off a location that fans of the iconic video games series the show is based on will be intimately familiar with.
The Last of Us has been one of the most iconic PlayStation exclusives created recently, with the studio behind the two-entry video game franchise, Naughty Dog, revealing a The Last of Us 2 documentary and new skins alongside a remaster of the most recent video game. The games also spawned a live-action adaptation for HBO, which had a successful first season that covered the first game’s events to fan appreciation. Thanks to this success and the presence of a ready-made plot via the second game, the show was greenlit for a second season, which started filming today.
The anticipation for the show’s second season has been hard to ignore, especially with The Last of Us season 2 cast adding Catherine O’Hara in a recurring role. Now, fans have even more cause for excitement because new behind-the-scenes photos from The Last of Us season 2 set indicate that an easily recognizable game location will appear in the upcoming second season. Via breadfruitworrywitch on Reddit’s r/ThelastofusHBOseries, a spoiler post shows a far-off photo of a light-colored building with a red roof and prominent sign, which the caption reveals to be Greenplace Market, a location that main characters Ellie and Dina visit on patrol in the early parts of The Last of Us 2, coming across a hoard of infected, which the game has the player clear out.
While the weather conditions in the game are noticeably different from the conditions the photo was taken under, and the red brick interior seen in the games is dropped in place of the more subtle color and material pictured, it’s still pretty recognizable. The location is one that fans of the games will remember quite well and will be excited to see in The Last of Us season 2, as the segment of the game that takes place there is pretty heavy on the action. While the adaptation likely won’t remake the game experience blow for blow, it will be interesting to see how the location is used in the live-action series. With The Last of Usranking as one of the best post-apocalyptic games of all time, there’s little wonder that some of the most evocative parts of the experience are the little details that drive home to the player and viewer that the world that the games and show inhabit was once just like ours.
The show is a fan favorite, but this comes with some potential drawbacks. While fans are certainly looking forward to it, The Last of Us 3 would put Naughty Dog in an unusual position by effectively cementing the studio’s identity and casting a shadow on all the other standalone projects in development. This potential overshadowing only stands to happen more decisively if The Last of Us season 2 lives up to expectations set by the success of the first.
The Last of Us season 2 is in production.
