Netflix‘s hit series Emily in Paris has had viewers obsessed for the past four years – but it seems that her language skills still leave a lot to be desired.
Viewers were left choking on their buttered croissants after all four seasons were plagued with French faux pas with the protagonist – played by Lily Collins – struggling to grasp the language despite living in the City of Love for years.
Now, language expert Malcolm Massey, who is a Babbel French teacher, is revealing the areas in which Emily is lacking and the things she could be doing better.
The speech pro told Insider that her refusal to grasp the language pointed to signs that she didn’t want to integrate herself in the culture.
Netflix ‘s hit series Emily in Paris has had viewers obsessed for the past four years – but it seems that her language skills still leave a lot to be desired (Emily seen in season four)
In season one, fans saw Emily moving to Paris – without having any prior knowledge of the language.
Because of this, upon her arrival to the dreamy city, the influencer and marketing mogul avoided using any French phrases – even the basic ones.
Malcolm told Insider: ‘Her avoidance of learning the language has prevented her from fully integrating with other Parisians.’
The language expert pointed to Emily’s first meeting with her boss, Sylvie.
Malcolm added: ‘So many things are going wrong here, Emily’s unprepared to interact in French on the most basic level. She greets in English, doesn’t even ask if he speaks English, and pulls out a translator app.’
Throughout season two and three, viewers see Emily attempting to speak French in a small amount of scenes.
However, it’s clear she didn’t go out of her way to attempt to learn the appropriate phrases as she frequently misused a number of words.
‘She’s come a long way, but there’s still lots of room for improvement,’ the language expert said.

In the latest season, viewers saw Emily attempting to learn the language, however, they were quick to point out her lackluster comprehension of the dialect
In season three, audiences see the budding Parisian takes on a position at Gabriel’s restaurant.
And while viewers were ready to see the content pro showcase both her waitressing and French skills, Emily left them disappointed when she ran off from the position because she wasn’t ready to communicate in French.
The pro told the outlet that it was ‘another example of her choosing something that is easier for her rather than trying to assimilate to the culture, which can often be seen as rude.’
By season four, Emily continues to speak mostly in English – and only occasionally adding in some French.
Emily did impress viewers – including Malcolm – after her proactive reaction to being called out by her on-and-off love interest Gabriel for not grasping French.

In the aftermath, she finally began researching and left her now-ex a detailed voicemail in French.
The language expert said: ‘While it’s not particularly fluid, and her pronunciation is still a bit off, she gets her point across and uses the right words and tenses.’
He noted that while her language skills in season four were ‘satisfactory,’ it may be too late for Emily to redeem herself in the eyes of the French.
