Doctor Strange and Wong Sorcerer Supreme Custom MCU Image

In the current MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange has yet to regain the title of Sorcerer Supreme. With Strange having lost the role following The Snap and his erasure from existence, the mystical title fell to Wong who now leads the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj. However, one has to wonder what kind of circumstances would need to happen for Strange to reclaim the role at some point in the MCU’s future.

As was revealed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange was considered ineligible to be the Sorcerer Supreme following his 5-year absence thanks to Thanos. Instead, Wong is now the current Sorcerer Supreme, as was the case in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the multiversal conflict with Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch. That being said, it’s quite possible that Doctor Strange could get his classic comics title back in future MCU projects.

Doctor Strange Could Become Sorcerer Supreme Again In Avengers 5 Or 6

Perhaps He’ll Have His Title Back Before Doctor Strange 3

Doctor Strange with the Avengers in Endgame

There’s certainly plenty of opportunity for Doctor Strange to get his title back in the MCU’s upcoming projects. Cumberbatch has already confirmed that Strange will be returning for Avengers 5, and a third Doctor Strange movie is currently in development. While there were initial reports that Doctor Strange 3 would serve as a prelude to Avengers5, that seems less likely given recent updates with Avengers: Doomsday reportedly filming as early as next year in 2025 (while updates on Doctor Strange have been slim). Instead, it’s more likely that Doctor Strange 3 will likely be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

At any rate, any of these options would be prime for Strange to regain his Sorcerer Supreme title. Whether it’s in the Dark Dimension trying to prevent incursions with Charlize Theron’s Clea in Doctor Strange 3, or in the multiversal epics that will be Doomsday and/or Secret Warsthere should be plenty of chances for Strange to do something truly amazing and regain his title. There’s also the far more tragic option where Wong perhaps dies in one of these upcoming MCU projects and the title is passed onto Strange as he’s still the powerful protector of New York’s Sanctum Sanctorum.

Should Doctor Strange Be Sorcerer Supreme In The MCU?

Has He Even Earned It At This Point?

Following his return post-Endgame, Doctor Strange has certainly made some big mistakes. This includes nearly ripping the whole of reality apart with the spell Spider-Man botched in No Way Home, or his use of the Darkhold to stop Wanda which was teased as having created an incursion within the Dark Dimension in Doctor Strange 2’s post-credits scene. It feels like the moment when Strange can truly earn back his role as Sorcerer Supreme has yet to come, an idea that does make Doctor Strange 3 and the next two Avengers films all the more exciting.
