Plies, also known as Algernod Lanier Washington, has recently filed a lawsuit against four artists, including Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Soulja Boy, and GloRilla. The rapper has accused the entire group of copyright infringement after they allegedly used the beats of his single Me & My Goons in their respective songs.
Algernod has been active in the music industry for more than 20 years. He has four albums to his credit, and his net worth currently stands at $6 million, as per CelebrityNetWorth.
A few more companies have been mentioned in the latest lawsuit. The legal documents acquired by TMZ also revealed the remaining defendants, starting with Hot Girl Productions alongside Collipark Productions, Universal Music Group, Collective Music Group, and Interscope Records.
The lawsuit says that Soulja Boy’s song Pretty Boy Swag included the beats of Plies’ single Me & My Goons. A similar thing was stated about GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion, who reportedly used the track’s beats for their collaborative single Wanna Be. The remix version of the song also featured Cardi B.
Notably, Soulja and GloRilla’s tracks managed to reach on top of the charts following their respective releases in 2010 and 2024. On the other hand, Algernod’s track was included in the soundtrack of his album Da REAList.
Algernod is reportedly seeking damages in his lawsuit and further details related to the same are currently awaited. Meanwhile, the four rappers are yet to share a response to the accusations.
Plies has accumulated a lot of wealth from his successful career over the years
The Fort Myers, Florida rapper has managed to build a huge fanbase through his flawless work as a rapper. His albums have mostly left a positive impression on the audience and has been nominated once at the Grammy Awards in 2011.
According to the Peoria Journal Star, Plies was initially not comfortable performing on the mic. However, he later recorded a portion of a single as a demonstration for another artist, following which he decided to establish himself in the music industry.
A statement by Algernod shared on the Atlantic Records website also reads:
“It wasn’t a dream of mine. It kind of happened accidentally. But at the same time, I’m a believer that nothing happens on accident.”
He released multiple mixtapes at the beginning of his career, starting with 36 Ounces in 2004. His singles eventually made him a popular face, including Shawty, Please Excuse My Hands, and Ran Off on da Plug Twice. Apart from that, Algernod’s videos on his Instagram page also became famous in 2015.
In an interview with Fader Magazine the following year, Plies opened up on whether his Instagram page becomes a distraction from working on the music he plans to release. He said that social media has never affected his work and added:
“My brother always told me, he thinks I’ll f*ck with music for forever because he feels that I like for people to hear my opinions and my thoughts. It doesn’t distract me. I’ve just realized enough is never enough.”
As mentioned, the 48-year-old has four albums in his credits. The first on the list is The Real Testament, which broke records in terms of sales and grabbed the second spot on the US Billboard 200. This was followed by Definition of Real, Da REAList, and Goon Affiliated, and all of them received a similar response.
Plies also released a compilation album, The Lost Sessions in 2009, along with an EP, 3 Headed Monster, in 2010. He has additionally made guest appearances on the projects released by artists like Chris Brown, Waka Flocka Flame, Jeezy, and more.
