Grammys Mistakenly Declares Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice as Best Rap Song Winners | Teen Vogue

One day before her debut album Y2K! was releasedIce Spice addressed her leaked text messages about Nicki Minaj, where she allegedly labeled her “ungrateful and delusional.”

In a cover story for Rolling Stone, published on July 25, Ice finally confirmed that the text thread her former friend Baby Storme exposed was real, adding that the messages were sent “in a moment of frustration.”

“She’s [Minaj] busy as hell. I don’t really think she cares about s**t like that coming from a random girl. But what I said in those texts was just in a moment of frustration around contract negotiations. I could have chose different words. But at the end of the day, regardless of how I felt in that moment, [Nicki] is still somebody I respect as an artist, and I’m always going to admire everything she’s done for me and the culture,” Ice said.

This came after Baby Storme posted two screenshots of text messages exchanged between her and Ice Spice, labeled as ‘Isis 2nd phone’, in May 2024. In the screenshots, Ice can be seen venting to Storme about Minaj’s contract negotiations and Barbie World, her collaboration song with Minaj for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie soundtrack.

In the messages, Ice Spice claimed that the Barbie producers reached out to her first to do a solo but she brought forth the idea of a collaboration with Nicki Minaj since that was her brand. Ice added that she “cut off” the Anaconda rapper and was not currently speaking to her.

“[The song] is an opportunity I brought her [Minaj]. Bc Barbie asked me to do it alone, but since that’s her brand I invited her on & she doesn’t even see that as me bringing her something. shes kinda like my mom. ungrateful and delusional. I cut her off btw not speaking to her ‘til January,” Ice Spice wrote in the messages.

Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj have collaborated twice

Before their Barbie World collaboration, Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj released a remix of Princess Diana from Ice’s debut Like..? (Deluxe). The remix, released on April 14, 2023, peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs and No. 4 on the Hot 100.

Following this, they released Barbie World on June 23, 2023. The song featured a sample of Aqua‘s 1997 song Barbie Girl and was played in the movie’s end credits. The track debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the highest-charting song from the soundtrack album. The album also featured Charli XCX’s Speed Drive, Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night, and Billie Eilish’s Oscar-winning What Was I Made For?

During her Rolling Stone interview, Ice Spice revealed that while she and Minaj did not have the “closest relationship,” they were “good” despite the leaked messages. She also lamented the loss of her trust in Baby Storme, adding that was the “saddest part” of the debacle.

“I think that the saddest part of the whole situation, it’s somebody I knew for so many years and called my friend had me open up and be vulnerable with them, and then took complete advantage of that for her own benefit. So that was the saddest part really, just feeling used, basically,” Ice said.

Ice Spice’s debut studio album, Y2K!, is now available on all music platforms.
