*It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. If you’re Ice Spice, Kanye West, or Nicki Minaj, those worst times included pretty bad music spotlighted on Variety’s “Worst Songs of 2024” list.
From the title alone, Spice’s ‘Think U the S**t (Fart)’ is an automatic worst for the “Munch” rapstress, who released the song in Jan.
For Variety’s Thania Garcia, “Think U The S**t (Fart) could’ve been a certified throwaway, but instead, it will be remembered “as a cringy novelty from the year 2024” that could’ve been laughed off or at the very least, “we could’ve forgotten about.”
“Unfortunately, and maybe even surprisingly for Ice Spice, most of the world is still not vibing with songs about feces and farts,” Garcia noted while taking shots at her “flailing and vapid delivery she gives with lines like: “Bitches be quick, but I’m quicker / Bitches be thick, but I’m thicker / She could be rich, but I’m richer.”
With eight of the 15 songs from the Variety list comprised of collaborations, Ye’s less than stellar “Carnival” with Ty Dolla $ign (under their group ¥$), Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti made the cut as “easily one of Chicago rhymesayer’s “more inferior hit singles.”
For the hook, Variety writer Steven J. Horowitz shined a light on West’s crass lyrics as well as the chorus of “Carnival,” which received a certified thumbs down.
“Never mind that its chorus, provided by the Inter Milan Ultras, is the worst kind of drunk chant you’d hear at a soccer game, that type of gross misogyny Ye consistently invokes,” he pointed out about the track, which was released in February and featured on West and Ty Dollar $ign’s debut album “Vultures 1.”
As for the rhymes, the critic noted how “Carnival” as a whole “feels artless and, above all, tactless,” with the words coming out of West’s mouth going, “Anybody pissed off, gotta make ’em drink the urine / Now I’m Ye-Kelly bitch, now I’m Bill Cosby, bitch.
Nicki Minaj, another well-known hitmaker, didn’t fare any better as she felt Garcia’s wrath while assessing the “Moment 4 Life” entertainer’s song “Big Foot.”
“Hindsight is 20/20 so it’s no surprise that Nicki Minaj’s “Big Foot” set the tone for such a horribly contentious year,” Garcia said about the tune, which was released in January as a response track to a diss Megan Thee Stallion threw at Minaj on her song “Hiss.”
“Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss” poked Minaj just far enough over the edge – with a now infamous reference to her husband being a sex offender – to light the firestorm that birthed the nearly five-minute crisis manifesto… Minaj was embarrassingly outlandish in her deliveries and threats…. this is a hard listen for anyone and appears far from a seasoned pro.”
Minaj, West, and Spice’s respective songs were among a slew of tunes that made Variety’s worst song list. To see the other songs on the compilation, click here.
