From Joaquin Phoenix’s menacing work in Joker, to Anne Hathaway’s jarringly real performance in Les Miserables, here’s actors who emaciated themselves for roles
Joaquin Phoenix’s work in Joker (2019) earned the actor his first ever Oscar. Phoenix, who is currently working on Joker 2, lost a total of 52 pounds to essay Arthur Fleck.
Anne Hathaway played the role of Fantine in the 2012 screen adaptation of Victor Hugo’s book Les Miserables. She lost close to 25 pounds for a keynote scene from the same.
Lily Collins essayed the role of a girl riddled with eating disorders in To The Bone (2017). The actress incidentally, has personally grappled with the disorders as well.
Tom Hanks essayed the role of AIDS patient Andrew Beckett in 1993 film Philadelphia. The role saw him drop 26 pounds to fit the bill.
Matthew McConaughey played a true blue Texan, afflicted by AIDS, in awards circuit favourite, Dallas Buyer’s Club (2013). The actor lost 40 pounds for the role.
The already petite Natalie Portman whittled down by a further 20 pounds, for her Oscar-winning role in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, as an internally conflicted ballet dancer.
Christian Bale dropped a whooping 60 pounds for his role in Brad Anderson’s The Machinist. He has also undergone similar transformations for films The Fighter and Rescue Dawn.
