See where the stars of the high-fashion 2006 comedy-drama are today.
Nearly two decades since The Devil Wears Prada graced the silver screen, it’s still impossible to get enough of the film and its stars.
The comedy-drama — starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker and Adrian Grenier in some of their most iconic roles — premiered in 2006 and has become one of the 2000’s most revisited movies for its memorable characters, quotable script and portrayal of the workday grind. Its cast of heavy hitters have gone on to lead countless projects and receive accolades for their talent, but they look back on The Devil Wears Prada fondly.
Partnered up for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Blunt told Hathaway, “We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie. I don’t know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life.”
Catch up with the stars of the 2000s classic, away from the world of Runway magazine.
Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs
Anne Hathaway had to fight for her role as protagonist Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who’s roped into the fashion world as the assistant of Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly. During a guest judge appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Hathaway, 41, told contestant Rosé that she was the “ninth choice” for the role.
“But I got it! Hang in there, never give up,” encouraged Hathaway, who later won Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for Les Misérables. She has two projects in the pipeline: sci-fi film Flowervale Street opposite Ewan McGregor and melodrama Mother Mary with Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer.
The Idea of You star admitted during a Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon interview that she’s “not huge on looking back” at past roles. In her April 2024 cover story for Vanity Fair, she said that she hadn’t watched the movie in “over a decade, maybe two decades.” However she did reunite with costars Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep for a nostalgic moment at the 2024 SAG Awards.
Hathaway has been married to actor Adam Shulman since 2012, and together, they share two sons: Jonathan, 8, and Jack, 4.
Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly
Meryl Streep needed no introduction when she was cast as the callous Miranda Priestly, Runway’s editor in chief. Already an Emmy and Oscar winner, the actress, now 75, earned another Academy Award nomination for her performance in The Devil Wears Prada. She would later claim a second Best Actress victory for her role as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 2011’s The Iron Lady. Streep currently stars in Only Murders in the Building as Loretta Durkin, the love interest of Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam.
Commemorating The Devil Wears Prada’s 15th anniversary with Hathaway, Blunt and Tucci, Streep confessed that taking a method acting approach to playing Miranda was “horrible.”
“I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed! I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!’ ” she recalled to Entertainment Weekly. “That’s the last time I ever attempted a method thing!”
Streep shares four kids with estranged husband Don Gummer: Henry, 44, Mamie, 40, Grace, 38, and Louisa, 33. A representative for Streep told PEOPLE in 2023 that the couple of 45 years had been separated for some time.
Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton
Emily Blunt’s portrayal of Miranda’s snobby assistant Emily Charlton launched her into stardom, and she has only soared higher since appearing in The Devil Wears Prada. The Quiet Place actress, 41, has won a Golden Globe and two SAG Awards, and she was recently nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. She is set to appear in the biopic The Smashing Machine as the wife of mixed martial artist Mark Kerr, played by Dwayne Johnson.
During a February 2024 interview on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Blunt shut down a potential for a sequel to the 2006 dramedy, saying there’s “never” been real effort to create a second installment.
“Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble and it’s okay,” she said of the film, based on the 2003 Lauren Weisberger novel of the same name.
Blunt is married to The Office star John Krasinski, whom she wed in July 2010. They have two daughters together, Hazel, 10, and Violet, 7.
Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling
Everyone needed someone like Stanley Tucci’s Nigel Kipling in their lives. The decorated actor, 63, played Runway’s art director, who reluctantly helps Hathaway’s Andy win over Miranda.
In 2007, the six-time Emmy winner took on one of his most ambitious roles as a serial killer in The Lovely Bones, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in the box office smashes Easy A and The Hunger Games, as well as Best Picture winner Spotlight. Tucci will play opposite Ralph Fiennes in the upcoming thriller Conclave and alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt and Ke Huy Quan in sci-fi adventure The Electric State.
“It was just such a beautiful piece of writing, and there’s no way that you could ever say no to such a thing. It was gorgeous,” Tucci recalled of the script, calling The Devil Wears Prada “the perfect Hollywood movie” in a 15th anniversary retrospective with EW.
In 2009, Tucci’s wife of 24 years, Kate, died of breast cancer. A year later, his Devil Wears Prada costar Emily Blunt introduced the actor to her older sister Felicity, and the two wed in 2012. The pair have two kids together, son Matteo, 9, and daughter Emilia, 6.
Simon Baker as Christian Thompson
Simon Baker had audiences swooning over his charming character, writer Christian Thompson. He then stepped into the shoes of his most notable character, California Bureau of Investigation consultant Patrick Jane, in The Mentalist, which ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2015. His performance in the CBS drama landed him his first Primetime Emmy when he won outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 2009. He is next slated to appear alongside the likes of Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams and Natasha Lyonne in the sci-fi dystopian film Klara and the Sun.
While on the Australian Today show, Baker, 54, confessed that he had never watched The Devil Wears Prada after it came out because he hadn’t “gotten around to it.”
“I don’t know, you’ve got to get a bit of distance from films sometimes,” he told the hosts.
Baker shares one daughter, Stella, and two sons, Baker and Rigg, with Australian actress Rebecca Rigg. The two married in 1998 but separated in April 2020.
Adrian Grenier as Nate Cooper
Adrian Grenier’s Nate Cooper, Andy’s infamous boyfriend, is still a subject of debate for the film’s fans to this day. The Entourage star, 47, weighed in on his Devil Wears Prada character to EW ahead of the film’s 15th anniversary, acknowledging that Nate “hadn’t grown up.”
“He couldn’t support [Andy] like she needed because he was a fragile, wounded boy … on behalf of all the Nates out there: Come on! Step it up!” Grenier said.
The Clickbait actor and his wife Jordan Roemmele eloped in 2022 while on vacation with friends in Morocco. The couple welcomed their first child Seiko in June 2023.
“I was flying high for many years, two decades in Hollywood and growing up in New York and I live a much more grounded lifestyle now,” he shared on the Today show. “I decided I was going to live closer to nature and commit to my wife and have a family, and have a child, which I’m so excited about.”
