Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan will take the reins of Netflix’s rom-com from for its second installment.
Netflix has renewed its rom-com series Nobody Wants This for a second season, after the streamer’s viewers put the lie to the show’s title.
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria announced the renewal at Bloomberg’s Screentime conference Thursday. Season two of Nobody Wants This will also have new showrunners, with Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan (Girls) taking over from Jack Burditt. Series creator Erin Foster remains an executive producer and writer on the show.
The renewal for Nobody Wants This comes two weeks after its premiere on Netflix. The series, which stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, debuted in second place on the streamer’s global rankings of English-language series and ascended to the top spot for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6. Over its first 11 days of release, it racked up almost 90 million hours of viewing worldwide, the equivalent of 26.2 million complete views of the season.
“Creating Nobody Wants This will forever be a career highlight for me. The incredible cast, crew, producers and executives all made this into the show it is today, and to experience viewers’ reactions to this series now that it’s out in the world has been more than anything I could have dreamed,” Foster said in a statement. “I’m so lucky to be able to continue this story, and to do it alongside Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan, who I’ve been such a fan of since Girls. Justice for healthy relationships being the most romantic!”
Nobody Wants This stars Bell as a podcaster who meets an unconventional rabbi (Brody) at a party. The two have an undeniable connection, but they’re also unsure about the obstacles — including his faith and her agnosticism — to building a relationship. Justine Lupe and Timothy Simons also star, along with Stephanie Faracy, Michael Hitcock, Tovah Feldshuh, Paul Ben-Victor, Emily Arlook, Jackie Tohn, Sherry Cola and Shiloh Berman.
“It’s a dream to be working on Nobody Wants This,” said Konner. “Erin is the rare creator with a crystal clear voice and a genuinely collaborative spirit. I am a true fan of Erin’s show and also feel so lucky to be back in a room with two of my favorites, Bruce Kaplan and Sarah Heyward from Girls.”
Added Kaplan, “I am excited beyond belief to be a part of Season 2 of Nobody Wants This, created by the hilarious Erin Foster. It is such a unique and beautiful show, and I am already having the best time working on it.”
20th Television produces Nobody Wants This in association with Steven Levitan Productions. Foster, Konner and Kaplan executive produce season two with Levitan, Bell, Sara Foster, Danielle Stokdyk, Jeff Morton, Jenni Konner Productions president Nora Silver and Oly Obst of 3Arts.
