‘Nobody Wants This’ star Jackie Tohn exclusively spoke to Us Weekly about where Esther, Sasha and Morgan’s love triangle will go in the…
“Season 2 is a-coming,” Tohn, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly on Wednesday, October 30. “I look forward to seeing how that’s going to resolve itself. I don’t know, but I imagine it’s going to be a sizable plot point — or at least how the season starts. I mean, we have to sweep that under the rug or squash it or whatever we end up doing.”
Nobody Wants This, which premiered on Netflix last month from creator Erin Foster, follows unconventional hot rabbi Noah (Adam Brody) and agnostic Joanne (Kristen Bell) as they fall in love despite family disapproval and religious differences. At the same time, Noah’s brother Sasha (Timothy Simons) starts a friendship with Joanne’s sister Morgan (Justine Lupe) as they bond over being the less accomplished siblings in their respective families. Sasha, however, is married to Esther (Tohn).
Despite the will-they-won’t-they chemistry between Sasha and Morgan, Tohn doesn’t think that he’d cheat on Esther. (Sasha and Esther share preteen daughter Miriam, whose New York-themed Bat Mitzvah Joanne and Morgan crashed in the finale.)
“I think he’s kind of obsessed with [Esther], and the thing that he did that’s the worst is he kept it from her,” Tohn told Us. “Now, would she have taken it well if he told her? No, but I’ve been in situations like this in the past where a dude pretends he’s not friends with his ex. He’s like, ‘I don’t get being friends with my exes. It’s not for me.’ And then I’m friends with my ex, and he’ll shame me about that. But then, I find out that the whole time we were together, they were not only friends but almost emotional support, like, mega-close.”
She explained the comparison, “It’s like, well, you can’t lie about it. Even if I wouldn’t have taken it well, then we would’ve talked about it and gotten to the bottom of it. You can’t just pick and choose what you keep from your partner, especially if it’s something like that.”
According to Tohn, Morgan does “end up thinking [Sasha] is kind of cute and charming,” but his heart remains with Esther.
“He’s still sort of, ‘I love my wife and I have a friend. Why can’t I have a friend?’” Tohn said.
The exact plot lines of Nobody Wants This season 2 have yet to be revealed as 42-year-old Foster, who crafted the show based on her own interfaith marriage to Simon Tikhman before converting to Judaism, is still working with her team of writers on the scripts.
The second season was quickly greenlit after the first broke all sorts of streaming records on Netflix.
“It’s so nuts and so exciting. I mean, you make a show, you have no idea who’s going to watch it or if anyone’s going to watch it,” Tohn said. “And I think everyone is sort of coming at it like, ‘Oh my God, you knew, right? You guys knew you had a hit on your hands.’ And it’s, like, you never know in this business. I mean, how many things we’ve all made and you’re like, ‘This is the one,’ and nobody watches it.”
Tohn further detailed why Nobody Wants This was able to break through and really make a splash on the streaming platform.
“I think that Kristen and Adam are really charming. I think the writing is fabulous, and I do think it’s really an easy watch, obviously,” Tohn told Us on Wednesday. “I mean, my opinions are the opinions of the people who love it. I’m just like, ‘Oh, this is what I’m clocking.’ Everyone’s loving it, watching it multiple times … and I guess I’m hearing from a lot of people that rom-coms were gone.”
She continued, “It’s just really cool to be a part of a thing so many people are loving.”
Nobody Wants This season is now streaming on Netflix.
