“I don’t even know what could be reconciled.”
Warning: Brief mention of rape.
Megan Thee Stallion addressed Nicki Minaj’s many comments toward her directly for the first time.
Though Nicki previously made jabs at Megan being shot by Tory Lanez in her music, the tension reached a new level this year when Megan released her track “Hiss.” In it, she raps, “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, / these hoes mad at Megan’s Law*.” Some people saw this as a shot at Nicki, given that her husband, Kenneth Petty, is a registered sex offender following his conviction for attempted rape.
*Megan’s Law refers to a federal law where information about sex offenders has to be public.
In response, Nicki rambled on Twitter for over a hundred tweets, where she ranged from making comments about Megan’s deceased mother to accusing the rapper of lying about being shot. Nicki also released her own track, “Big Foot,” which followed suit.
In a new interview with Billboard, Megan was asked about the “competitive rap energy” that was sparked by the release of “Hiss” (See: Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef kicking off shortly afterward). In response, Megan said, “I would like to think that I start things. I don’t know; I just knew what I had to do and what I had to say. If it opened up the door for everyone else to get shit off their chest, well, I’m glad.”
When asked directly if there was a chance for “a reconciliation or even another collaboration” with Nicki, Megan replied, “I still to this day don’t know what the problem is. I don’t even know what could be reconciled because I, to this day, don’t know what the problem is.”
Elsewhere in the piece, Megan discussed what it’s like having negative bars written about her in general, saying, “If people feel like I’m somebody to aim at, then I must be pretty high up if you’re reaching up at me. I must be some kind of competition. That makes me feel good. That makes me feel like I could rap because if I wasn’t the shit, y’all wouldn’t be worried about me.”
