Emily in Paris star Lucas Bravo has played the character, Gabriel, for four seasons and has admitted that he was ‘frustrated’ with the Netflix show.
Emily in Paris star Lucas Bravo has left fans shocked after revealing he might leave the popular Netflix series, stating it’s “not fun anymore.” The 36 year old French actor had previously expressed his desire for his character, the attractive chef Gabriel, to experience some “growth” in the fifth season of the successful romantic comedy.
Now, he’s hinted at potentially leaving Emily in Paris due to his frustrations. Gabriel is the love interest of Lily Collins’ lead character Emily, and while fans are eagerly discussing the future of the on-screen couple, Lucas could dash their dreams of Gabriel and Emily finding their happily ever after.
In a recent interview, Lucas mentioned that playing the “sexy chef” was enjoyable for him in the show’s first season, but as the series progressed, he “grew apart” from the character “because of the direction they make him take”. He told IndieWire: “They made him kind of unaware of his surroundings. Of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone.”
He confessed that he feels his character is “being slowly turned into guacamole,” and Lucas expressed his disappointment over the evolution of Gabriel, as it was a role he initially “loved” portraying. “I really grew apart from him,” he admitted, reports the Mirror.
He also mentioned that his contract with Netflix concluded with the fourth season, meaning he’s not obligated to return as Gabriel, despite the series being renewed for another season last month. Lucas expressed his frustration with the writers, revealing his annoyance at not having any say or control over his character.
“I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set. We cannot change a word or an emotion,” he elaborated. “It makes me question if I want to be part of season five. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self,” Lucas confessed.
“Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”
Lucas voiced his dissatisfaction with the creativity of the popular show, alleging that showrunner Darren Star was “very precious about not changing the recipe” of Emily in Paris, and wouldn’t entertain anything dramatic happening that could deter viewers. “Anything that could go off road is carefully taken back. It’s a lot of souffles. Pregnant? No, fake positive. Going to Rome? No, coming back. There are a lot of things like that. There is a lack of risk,” Lucas vented.
He admitted his remarks sounded severe but maintained they were justified regarding the evolution of his on-screen persona, confessing his dwindling joy in shooting the series. “I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction my character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over,” he hinted.
