During a late-night chat with Glamour, the British actor chose sides between Marcello and Gabriel and predicted whether Alfie’s new girlfriend will be Emily’s friend or foe.
Last night, I had the distinct pleasure of informing Lucien Laviscount that Alfie’s new relationship will play out in season five of Emily in Paris. Warning: spoilers ahead.
No, I’m not a Netflix exec or Laviscount’s agent—I just happened to read Glamour’s recent interview with creator Darren Star covering the unanswered questions from the season four finale. “We definitely will want to see Alfie next season,” Star told senior editor Jessica Radloff, noting the big question mark surrounding the fan favorite’s mysterious new girlfriend. “We’ll discover [who they are] next season…. there are some thoughts.”
He also reveals if the show will go back to Rome, whether we’ll meet Alfie’s new girlfriend, and how that Brigitte Macron cameo came about.
“You’re giving me spoilers here! I didn’t know any of this,” Lucien says excitedly over FaceTime from an Emily in Paris screening after-party at the Baccarat Hotel. In fact, the lead-up to this interview feels like the workplace B-story of an Emily in Paris episode. After accepting a last-minute invitation to meet Laviscount at the party, I (a writer named Emily) discover the hotel is actually in New York City while I’m already on my way to my first scheduled event of the night in Los Angeles. What will Emily do?!
Forty-five minutes after that initial panic, we find ourselves chatting on FaceTime, me tucked into a semiquiet corner just outside the Sunset Tower Hotel bathrooms while Laviscount sips on an Emily in Paris Lillet Royale Rosé cocktail—two parts Lillet Rosé, two parts champagne, 1/2 part of strawberry puree, garnished with strawberries and mint leaves—over 2,000 miles away.
His charm definitely is just as effective through an iPhone screen as it is on TV. “Your party isn’t as glamorous as ours, but we wish you were here,” Laviscount says, and it feels like he means it. Suddenly, I’m Team Alfie all over again.
Here’s what Lucien Laviscount had to say about returning for season five (now that he knows it’s in the cards), his next onscreen love interest, and whether he’s Team Gabriel, Team Marcello, or still pulling for Emily and Alfie to work things out.
To start with the obvious, do you want to return for season five?
Lucien Laviscount: This gig has changed my life in so many different ways. To work with these incredible people, day in, day out, for the past few seasons, it’s been a dream come true. So to come back would be an honor, privilege, and all the fun stuff as well. So yeah, I’d love to come back.
What do you want for Alfie when it comes to a partner after his breakup with Emily?
After his kind of transformation with Emily and her strong, independent, go-getter attitude to life and to love…I don’t know. Just the way she explores the vulnerability and her openness, I think it’s going to take someone really special to fill them boots. So if we’re going to see her, it’s going to be amazing to see who can step into her shoes or step out of them.
Do you think she’ll be a friend or foe to Emily?
Gosh, I think a little badass attitude doesn’t do any harm. But a friend, for sure. That’s how the Emily in Paris–verse works. Everyone’s friendly foes, to an extent.
Except maybe Genevieve. People seem to think she’s just “foe.”
Mmmmmm…. She about that life!
What do you think of Alfie’s advice to Gabriel to go to Rome to get Emily back instead of letting “pride and misunderstanding” come between them?
That just shows Alfie’s maturity, thinking of a friend. Also, his naivety to his own feelings. I think sometimes Alfie definitely is selfless in his acts, and he’s selfless in who he is. And I don’t think he thinks about his own feelings as much as he thinks about other people’s. It’s a selfless move, and I think he’s got a true friend—he feels like he’s got a true friend within Gabriel, anyway. He’s just there to support him and along his journey and whatever will come of it. Yeah, just do it with your full heart on your sleeve.
You say Alfie can be “naive to his own feelings” and doesn’t “think about his own feelings.” Is there a part of you that thinks there’s still a chance for Emily and Alfie?
I think that door’s always going to be open. They had such an incredible time together, and they grew so much together as well. It’d be foolish to say that love would be off the cards in the long run. I think they’ve got a mutual respect for each other as well, you know. When you greatly respect someone…
[Laviscount pauses while looking somewhere off camera]
Hey, no getting the answer from someone else! [Laughs]
No, I’m not! [Publicists in the room laugh.] I’m looking to see if I’m gonna get in trouble for saying something, more than anything. My apologies.
Okay, let’s ignore Alfie for one second. Many fans are choosing between Team Gabriel vs. Team Marcello (with much of the internet rooting for Marcello). What’s your take?
I’d like to say I’m not picking sides, but Gabriel’s my boy. Alfie has not met Marcello yet, so I think that he understands where Gabriel’s heart is at and where his head’s at. I think Alf is definitely rooting for Gabriel in this.
So you don’t think Gabriel behaved too poorly this season?
I think the guy’s just figuring it out! Alfie kind of sees Gabriel for the true hopeless, helpless romantic that he is. But yeah, he’s not got all his ducks in a row just yet, and Alfie’s there to support him while he figures this out.
Alfie’s advice to Gabriel was to go after Emily. What’s your advice?
My advice is, yeah, go after it—go get it! I like to think that with romance, if you go for something, you can get the result at the end of it. He just needs to go and get it—go get the girl he loves.
