Did You Catch the Kate Middleton Reference in 'Emily in Paris' Season 4?

In the first episode of Emily in Paris season four, viewers may catch a brief reference to Kate Middleton.

Mindy (Ashley Park), getting ready to sit in the JVMA suite at the French Open with her boyfriend Nicolas (Paul Forman), is gifted an outfit by him. It’s a pink dress, and Emily (Lily Collins) comments, “It’s a little more Kate Middleton than you normally go, but couture is couture.”

The dress intentionally evokes Kate’s tennis style; while the Princess of Wales is a regular at Wimbledon and Mindy is getting ready to go to Roland Garros, the dress that Mindy ends up wearing is a clear homage to Kate’s courtside style.

Namely, Mindy’s pink coat dress—with its white trim, pastel color, and button detailing— evokes the Balmain dress that the Princess wore to Wimbledon in 2023. In fact, Netflix shared that Mindy’s pink dress is vintage Balmain.

While Mindy ends up frustrated with the intention behind Nicolas gifting her the dress—it wasn’t, as he said, because everyone in the JVMA suite at the French Open “has to wear a JVMA designer,” but because his dad wanted her to dress more conservatively—it is still a nice easter egg for royal watchers. Later, Mindy decides to sell the dress on Vestiaire Collective as a way to pay for her Eurovision trip.
