Warning: The following contains spoilers for the Emily in Paris Season 4 finale. Proceed at your own risk!
Emily in Paris might need to change its name to Emily in Rome, because the titular gal is relocating to Italy!
In the Netflix comedy’s Season 4 finale, Emily was on a romantic vacation with Marcello in Rome when Sylvie crashed the trip, determined to turn Emily’s personal getaway into a professional get by landing Marcello’s family’s business as a client. Emily, initially, resisted mixing business with pleasure again, insisting to Marcello that she was there for him, not work. But eventually, Marcello’s mother was won over by Emily’s vision for her company — and insisted that Emily run the account! Sylvie tasked Emily with heading up Agence Grateau’s Rome office and wasted no time finding her a new apartment.
Meanwhile, in Paris, Mindy broke the news to Gabriel that Emily was moving to Rome. After some encouraging words from Alfie about not letting his pride get in the way of the greatest girl in the world, Gabriel rushed to Mindy’s door and asked for Emily’s exact whereabouts. But is he too late? Back in Rome, Emily was meeting up with Marcello for a date and declaring that she’s happy.
Elsewhere in the finale, Cami told Emily that she’s adopting a baby; Gabriel got a Michelin star and turned down Genevieve’s advances; Mindy and Nicolas broke up (for good?); Mindy was disqualified from Eurovision, but later went viral on the Internet after performing an original song on the streets of Rome, earning her an invite to judge Chinese Pop Star; and Sylvie reunited with a former lover in Rome.
Below, showrunner Darren Star reveals why he’s excited about Emily’s big move and whether Gabriel can win her back. The EP also previews Alfie and Cami’s futures on the show, and explains Emily and Gabriel’s heartbreaking breakup earlier in the season.
Plus, scroll down to grade the season finale!
TVLINE | Before we talk about the finale, why did you decide to have Emily and Gabriel break up in Episode 6 after they finally got together and they just said “I love you”?
I think it was just more sort of the circumstances of what was happening in terms of the story. It wasn’t like they have to break up now. It was just sort of the miscommunications of where things were going. I think from Gabriel’s point of view, there was also frustration about what happened with he and Camille and the baby. I just felt like it was almost like a domino effect of unfortunate circumstances that affected their relationship.
TVLINE | In the finale, Emily seems pretty happy with Marcello. Obviously, Gabriel still has feelings for her. What, in your opinion, makes Gabriel the right guy for her? And what makes Marcello a better boyfriend for her?
First of all, we know a lot more about Gabriel than we do about Marcello. I think Marcello is somebody Emily is just getting to know and has this infatuation with at the moment. Gabriel and Emily are building history. A big part of what happened this season for Emily and Gabriel was sort of like the romantic fantasies of each other, like the rose-colored glasses coming off a little bit. I think a lot of couples get real and they go through shakeups. So sometimes you have to, like, lose what you have before you realize how much it means to you.
TVLINE | We don’t see Gabriel quite make it to Rome to get Emily back. But should he show up at her door, does he have a chance of wooing her away?
I don’t know if it’s that simple as just showing up at her door.
TVLINE | When Sylvie announced that Emily was going to be overseeing the Rome office, it sounded like a pretty indefinite relocation, but then Emily tells Mindy that it’s temporary. So how much of this move is permanent?
There’s no Season 5 yet, so I don’t know. It’s to be determined. But I feel like there’s another office in Rome.
TVLINE | Should you get that renewal, what excites you about the possibility of having Emily in Rome for maybe a little while?
I feel like it just expands the universe of the show. Just at the point that Emily has gotten comfortable in Paris, she’s sort of thrown into another country where she’s going to experience some cultural differences. And also, I think there’s cultural differences to explore — and we do — between French and Italians. It’s a whole new world, but it doesn’t mean that we’re leaving Paris.
TVLINE | I was really happy to hear that Alfie found a new girlfriend. Is that a relationship which, hopefully, we’ll see in a potential Season 5?
TVLINE | What about Cami? Her not being pregnant took an interesting turn with her deciding to adopt a baby. How much of her journey will still be a part of the show moving forward?
I don’t know. I think that’s a question. Characters can come in and out of a series, but you don’t necessarily have to see them. We may or may not. I don’t know how much of Camille we’ll see next season. But again, she’s part of the world of the series. I’m not sure how soon we’ll see her, but it doesn’t mean, again, that we won’t be seeing her.
TVLINE | What about the decision to have her adopt? What made that the right turn for the storyline?
It’s what Cami wanted to do after she met with the priest about doing it with Gabriel. She decided she wanted to do it on her own. I think she got very connected. I think she had her heart set on having a baby, and I think after discovering this was a possibility for her, she decided it’s what she wanted to do.
TVLINE | Mindy’s relationship was also full of ups and downs this season. Are she and Nicolas officially over now?
You know, that’s a Season 5 question.
TVLINE | Talk to me about the song that she performs in the finale, and the inspiration, and how it all came together.
I spoke to Ashley [Park]a about the fact that we wanted to do an original song, and really, it was Ashley that said she really wanted her character to have some sort of, like, creative authorship of it. I really love that idea. So we kind of approached Freddy Wexler, who also wrote “Mon Soleil,” about composing an original song.
TVLINE | Finally, I wanted to ask about Genevieve, because I was curious how deliberate and manipulative she is in regards to Emily, versus just being young and maybe naïve and misguided?
What do you think?
TVLINE | I think it’s maybe a combination of the two.
Yeah, I think so, too. I don’t think she’s that manipulative, but at the same time, I think she is not as simple as she might seem at the beginning of when we meet her.
Emily in Paris fans, what did you think of the season ender? Are you Team Gabriel or Team Marcello?
