Deadpool & Wolverine brought fan-favorite Lady Deadpool to the big screen 15 years after her comic debut. As a more obscure Marvel character, Lady Deadpool being in a major film seemed like a long shot, but Deadpool & Wolverine is exactly the movie to take that risk. Portrayed by Blake Lively, the anti-heroine appears as part of a larger group of Deadpool variants, called the Deadpool Corps, for a climactic battle. The scene was a hit with audiences, including Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld.
After the film premiered, Liefeld wrote on X: “Can we get a Lady Deadpool film please? Asking for myself.” Lady Deadpool’s limited screen time left audiences wanting more. If the MCU listens to Liefeld, a film focused on Lively’s Lady Deadpool could address those complaints and expand on the Deadpool Corps.
Lady Deadpool’s Role In Deadpool & Wolverine Was Smaller Than Theories From The Trailer Suggested
Deadpool & Wolverine Only Featured Lady Deadpool In One Scene
When Deadpool & Wolverine revealed Lady Deadpool would be in the film, speculation ran rampant about the character. In particular, fan theories cast Lively, Anya Taylor-Joy, and even Taylor Swift as Lady Deadpool. The cult-favorite character’s inclusion excited fans, but when Deadpool & Wolverine came out, Lady Deadpool showed up once and never took her mask off.Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy stated that he and Lively “never discussed taking off her mask.”
Of note, none of the Deadpool Corps’ members were unmasked, despite including celebrity cameos such as Matthew McConaughey as Cowboypool. However, these characters were not featured in the trailer. Lady Deadpool’s appearance in the marketing for Deadpool & Wolverine implied she’d be a larger part of the film. A Lady Deadpool-centric spinoff could fulfill the promise Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer made.
A Lady Deadpool Spinoff Movie Story Could Shed More Light On The Deadpool Corps
The Deadpool Corps Were One Of The Most Interesting Inclusions In Deadpool & Wolverine
If Lady Deadpool gets a follow-up movie, Deadpool & Wolverine’s Deadpool Corps will undoubtedly return. Bringing back the colorful cast of Deadpool variants has a lot of potential. In the film, they are seen working for Cassandra Nova, without explaining how they wound up in the Void. Lady Deadpool’s film could show why she was deemed a threat to her timeline by the TVA, as well as how she became part of the Deadpool Corps.
Before Deadpool & Wolverine was released, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the movie was who was going to play Lady Deadpool. The MCU revealed that Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively, Reynolds’ wife, was behind the character, as many speculated. While Lively was fun in the role, Lady Deadpool’s face was never seen, and the character was pretty much only in the movie for an action sequence. As such, I felt Lady Deadpool’s role and reveal quite disappointing after so much speculation.
Deadpool & Wolverine shows Lady Deadpool at the forefront of the Deadpool Corps, so her spinoff could show her leading the “team.” This creates the potential to bring back Cowboypool, Headpool, Kidpool, and other fun variants, and it could show how they navigate the Void after Cassandra Nova’s death. Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t tease any sequels, but it nonetheless set up a lot of story opportunities for Lady Deadpool and the Deadpool Corps. Besides, the MCU is missing out on both a comedic and a commercial goldmine if they don’t capitalize on the Deadpool sequel’s popularity.
The MCU’s Special Presentations Make A Deadpool Corps Spinoff More Likely
The MCU Could Bring Lady Deadpool And The Deadpool Corps Back For A Television Special
Creating a Deadpool & Wolverine spinoff could take a few different forms. Liefeld pitched a film, but the MCU does take other forms. An animated series could be a natural fit for the zany Deadpool Corps. However, a good option to tell a Lady Deadpool story is through a Marvel Studios Special presentation. These are direct-to-streaming productions that are set in the MCU, akin to television specials of old like those made by Rankin Bass.
As of 2024, two Marvel Studios Special Presentations have been released: Werewolf By Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. A Lady Deadpool special could be a good way to continue the story without the expense of a theatrical release. Additionally, it could avoid the pitfalls of recasting famous voice actors who may not want to commit to a film or a full series. Lady Deadpool is a popular character, but she may be better suited for event television. Even so, a Lady Deadpool or Deadpool Corps spinoff is begging to be made.
A Disney+ release, be it a film or a special, would be a good way to explore Deadpool & Wolverine’s lore. It minimizes the investment Marvel Studios has to put into the project while providing more for Deadpool fans to enjoy. The purpose of Marvel Studios Special Presentations is to tell stories that don’t necessitate a movie, which is perfect for a Deadpool & Wolverine spinoff. Moreover, giving Lady Deadpool her time in the sun via a Disney+ special is a great way to continue her story and make up for her small role in Deadpool & Wolverine.
