The ‘Sex and the City’ writer is not sure that giving his ‘Emily in Paris’ protagonist a happy ending is the point of his creation.
The esteemed name behind Sex and the City and its younger counterpart Emily in Paris, Darren Star, has confirmed the real reason that everybody’s favourite American expat might never get her happily-ever-after.
‘I don’t think there’s much of a story once happily-ever-after happens,’ he confessed to Forbes on August 16 ahead of season four of Emily in Paris’ release. ‘These are very passionate relationships and strong characters and what keeps me engaged is finding those obstacles that feel truly emotional.’
While the now-confirmed fifth season of the hit series is set to centre Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and her new Italian beau Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), it looks as if Star is set on testing Emily’s frissons rather than giving her the love of her life once and for all. ‘Life takes Emily in a lot of unexpected directions. That doesn’t mean they still may not have a chance to be together. When people are meant to be together they find their way to each other,’ said Star.
Between Marcello and Gabriel, Emily’s certainly not short of male suitors, but when asked whether it was in his protagonist’s best interests to go back to Gabriel in the fifth season, Star paused briefly before answering. ‘I think Gabriel has to grow up in some ways and has to earn Emily back.’ He explained that he and his team of writers agree that Gabriel can’t go in and destroy her new relationship. ‘That’s not the way to win her heart. So, it may just be that now is not the moment for the two of them.’
Given that in the season four finale, Gabriel knocks on Mindy’s (Ashley Park) door asking where exactly Emily is, it’s too soon to tell exactly how this affaire de cœur will unfold.
