A recent announcement by Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese revealed that the WNBA star would miss the remainder of the 2024 season. Reese suffered a season-ending injury that will sideline her for the remainder of the year.
The star rookie was first reported as “questionable” for the Sky’s next matchup with a wrist injury. According to the Chicago Sky, she was then reevaluated, and the injury designation was downgraded to “out” for the rest of the year.
Reese originally announced the news on her own social media account. She mentioned that she was grateful for the fan love, and while it’s disappointing, Reese understands that it’s part of her “plan.”
Prior to the Indiana Fever’s matchup against the Atlanta Dream on Sunday, reporters spoke with fellow rookie Caitlin Clark.
They asked the Fever star about Reese’s season-ending injury, and Clark shared her thoughts on the news.
Clark mentioned that it’s sad to hear, but Reese has done some incredible things in her “historic” rookie season.
“It’s definitely sad whenever you see anyone go down with an injury, especially people that you came into this league with,” Clark said. “She’s had a historic year, and she’s done some incredible things.”
Angel Reese caps off her rookie season having averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. She was the only rookie averaging a double-double and also leads the WNBA in average rebounds.
Reese holds the record for the most rebounds in a single season with 446 boards.
Clark and Reese have both been historic in their rookie seasons.
The Fever guard has averaged 19.0 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game. She leads all rookies in averaging scoring and leads the WNBA in average assists.
Both young stars were battling for the Rookie of the Year award prior to Reese’s injury.
The Chicago Sky will now look to continue their playoff push without their most consistent contributor on both ends of the floor. Chicago has lost eight of its last 10 games, but they still hold the No. 8 seed in the WNBA with a 12-22 record.
Clark and the Fever, on the other hand, are in a position to make a strong playoff push. They’re currently ranked as the No. 6 team in the WNBA standings with an 18-17 record.
