“Somebody needs to tell @icespice Absolutely nothing about this… is Y2K at all.”
Azealia Banks took to social media to offer her opinion on Ice Spice‘s rollout for her upcoming Y2K album. The Harlem rapper shared critique for the Bronx-bred newcomer’s sound and aesthetic as the release date nears. Her commentary comes as Ice Spice uploaded a teaser to Instagram, rapping along to her latest single “Phat Butt.”
“Somebody needs to tell @icespice Absolutely nothing about this aesthetically, performance wise, production wise is Y2K at all…This is like VIM early Nicki Minaj pack weave.” wrote the 33-year-old, sharing the clip to her Instagram story. The post was screen recorded and reshared by The Neighborhood Talk blog.
She continued, “We need a new hair color and a new facial expression. Ice I love you down but you should put the halt button, drop David lachapplle and re do this. Big butts and BBL bodies are the ANTITHESIS OF Y2K.”
Earlier this year, Ice Spice confirmed the Y2K album for a 2024 release after first teasing the project in November 2023. Revealing the cover art earlier this month, the Grammy-nominated musician announced a July 26 release date.
“Yes, I’ve been playing the album fully through in the car, volume all the way up,” detailed Ice Spice of putting the songs through a car test during a March 2024 appearance on Hot Ones hosted by Sean Evans, per NME. “It passed, thankfully it passed.”
She continued to tease, “There is a track on the album, I just launched straight into the verse and there’s not really a hook so I’m excited to hear what the fans think about that.”
