Ted Danson’s brand-new Netflix show A Man on the Inside has already proven very popular, which raises questions about whether the show will be renewed for season 2. Incredibly, A Man on the Inside is based on a true story, although some key details have been changed. In the original story, captured in the 2020 documentary The Mole Agent, an 83-year-old man named Sergio Chamy was hired to go undercover and investigate potential mistreatment at a Chilean nursing home. In A Man on the Inside, Charles (Ted Danson) is hired to investigate alleged theft at a San Francisco retirement community.
Although The Mole Agent ended with Sergio Chamy returning home to his family, the ending of A Man on the Inside made it clear that Charles’ story may not be over yet. Thus far, season 2 of A Man on the Inside hasn’t been confirmed; however, there are a number of story opportunities for a second season based on the events of season 1. A Man On The Inside Season 1 Ends With Charles Accepting A New Mission

As mentioned, Sergio Chamy’s spy days ended when his mission at the nursing home concluded. This was not the case for Charles, though. In the final scenes of A Man on the Inside season 1, private investigator Julie gives Charles a call to let him know that she has a new mission for him, and Charles readily accepts. Although the exact details of the new mission are currently unknown, clearly, the door remains open for A Man on the Inside to return for another season.
At minimum, this means the creators wanted there to be an opportunity for the show to get another season, which is likely a good sign for those hoping to see season 2. The open-ended nature of the mission Charles accepted also means story possibilities are effectively endless for additional seasons. Julie implied that Charles was the only man for the job, which may mean it is another age-based job like the first job was, but beyond that (which is only conjecture), Charles’ story could go in countless different directions from here.

Charles’ Family Dynamics Remain Complex Even After Season 1
There are also plenty of narrative reasons for A Man on the Inside’s story to continue, including to further explore Charles’ complex family dynamics. At the beginning of A Man on the Inside season 1, it was clear that Charles had a strained relationship with his daughter, Emily, especially following the tragic death of Charles’ wife. Over the course of the show, the two began to work on their relationship, ultimately having a very touching conversation and finding mutual understanding. However, there is a long road ahead for the two to become truly close, as they both want to be.
There are also plenty of narrative reasons for A Man on the Inside’s story to continue, including to further explore Charles’ complex family dynamics.
The issue also seemed to be generational, as Emily and her husband, Joel, struggled throughout A Man on the Inside season 1 to get control of their three rowdy and reckless sons. Unlike Emily’s relationship with her father, though, this parent-child relationship didn’t make much progress in season 1. A Man on the Inside season 2 could certainly follow up on this plot line, especially because both Emily and Joel expressed feeling as though they were failing as parents.

Season 2 Is Evidently In Netflix’s Hands
In addition to the possibilities revealed in the show itself, the cast and creators have also commented on the possibility of A Man on the Inside season 2. Recently, Mike Schur’s season 2 update indicated that the cast and crew remain interested in a second season if that ends up being in the cards for the show. Schur explained:
We’re sort of in a fingers crossed, we’ll that bridge when we come to it, kind of a deal. But I will say that there is no shortage of ideas from me and from other writers about what we might do in a future season. Fingers crossed, we’ll see.
This echoes comments shared by Ted Danson regarding his interest in a possible season 2 of A Man on the Inside.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Danson voiced similar sentiments about the opportunity to make a second season of the show. Danson said:
“Oh, everyone involved would love to do a second season. That’s kind of up to Netflix, so fingers crossed it does. There’s no shortage of stories to tell. So yes, to answer your question, but we’re jumping the gun. People have to watch it first. But I would love to because it’s one of my favorite things that I’ve been in, and it is all of the above — sweet, tender, sad, but just a celebration of life.”
Clearly, interest remains very high for the cast and the creators, so it seems A Man on the Inside season 2 really will entirely come down to the discretion of Netflix.
Given the popularity and success of A Man on the Inside so far, though, this may be good news. Impressively, A Man on the Inside currently has a 96% rating with critics and a 95% rating with general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This suggests that the show has more than landed, which could bode very well for a possible season 2. Although no announcement has been made yet, hope remains that A Man on the Inside will be renewed for season 2.
