Wicked received 4 Golden Globe nominations, but unfortunately it surprisingly missed out on one major award

This wicked witch cleaned up with the Golden Globes voters.

As expected, the blockbuster hit “Wicked” landed several 2025 Golden Globe Award nominations on Monday, including Best Comedy/Musical, Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, the category which the Golden Globes award “to the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.”

But despite its impressive windfall, director Jon M. Chu failed to land a nomination for Best Director. Instead, the Golden Globes voters leaned more high-brow with directing nominations for Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Sean Baker (“Anora”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”), and two surprises: Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”) and Payal Kapadia (“All We Imagine as Light”).

Since its release in November, “Wicked” has become a true phenomenon with more than $400 million in ticket sales. Critics and pundits have embraced the movie alongside audiences, and “Wicked” now seems assured of landing several Oscar nominations next year, including Best Picture.

Erivo is now a four-time Golden Globes nominee, having previously been recognized for “Harriett” and “Genius: Aretha.” Grande is a first-time nominee.

“Wicked” will compete with many assumed Oscar contenders in Best Comedy/Musical, including “Anora,” “Emilia Perez,” “A Real Pain,” and “The Substance.”

Based on the musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holtzman, which itself is based on the book by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked” stars Erivo as Elphaba and Grande as Galinda/Glinda, and tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West and the time in the Land of Oz before the events of “The Wizard of Oz.” Co-stars in the film include Jonathan Bailey, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum as the wizard.

“Wicked” is a two-part film adaptation of the musical. The second part will debut in theaters on November 21, 2025.
