Iconic actor Jon Hamm talked about how he receieved a certain phone call from his agents about starring alongside Tom Cruise and he said ‘yes’!

tom cruise, jon hamm It was an ordinary day just like any other when iconic actor Jon Hamm received a phone call from his agent. The agent remarked that they wanted him in a Tom Cruise film titled Top Gun: Maverick.

Naturally, Hamm was over the moon upon hearing the news since he had grown up watching the iconic 1986 film Top Gun. He was so excited that he immediately said yes to the film without even reading the script!

When Jon Hamm Received The Phone Call

Hamm didn’t find worldwide fame and love until he was 36 years of age. The actor got the opportunity to star in a show titled Mad Men. The show became Hamm’s breakthrough role as he found himself in bigger and better projects.
However, the best opportunity that Jon Hamm received was starring in the iconic 2022 Tom Cruise film Top Gun: Maverick. Being a sequel to the classic film, no one was more excited to be in the film than Hamm.

In an interview with Uproxx, the Baby Driver actor recalled the moment he got a call from his agent for a role in Top Gun: Maverick. Suffice it to say, that Hamm did not say no to the opportunity.

I got a call. I remember I was in my car and the phone rang. And I picked it up, hands-free of course. They said, ‘They’re looking at you for this ‘Top Gun’ sequel.’ And I was like, ‘What? Hell yes.’ They said, ‘We haven’t seen a script.’ I said, ‘Tell them yes.’

Well, we don’t know what we’re getting paid.’ ‘I don’t care. Tell them, yes. We’ll work all that s*** out later.’ And I had a meeting with Chris McQuarrie and everybody, and a phone call with Jerry Bruckheimer, and everybody seemed very excited.

Sometime later, Hamm found himself on the sets of Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise. Hamm portrayed the character of Cyclone in the film (who wasn’t exactly a fan of Maverick).

But hey, at least Jon Hamm got to star alongside an iconic actor in a sequel to a film that he grew up watching. However, Hamm’s Hollywood career wasn’t so great from the start as the actor had his fair share of problems before.

Jon Hamm Had The Chance To Work With Steven Spielberg!

Before he found success with Mad Men, Jon Hamm didn’t have any money to his name. As a result, Hamm had to do a number of odd jobs just to get by. However, the actor picked up a few projects here and there.Jon Hamm and Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show | Credits: Apple TV+

In the midst of Hollywood and television shows, Hamm found himself stuck with some contracts that bound him. Years later, the actor revealed to The Guardian that he had met Steven Spielberg.

I had met Steven Spielberg and all these people that had my eyes just rolling back in my head. The opportunities I almost had! And there’s this hideous thing they make you do when you go up for a television show: they make you sign a contract before you walk into the final audition.

And here lay the rub.

The last thing they want is for you to have everyone fall in love with you, and then you not have a deal in place. So you sign this thing – and I had no money; I was broke.

Naturally, Hamm had to leave his fair share of opportunities to work on meager projects. However, with Mad Men, the actor found himself to newer heights of stardom.

Finding worldwide fame and acclaim, Hamm started getting bigger and better opportunities. Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick received a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDB and a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic film is available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.
